Smith Mountain Lake supports many populations of fish species, making it a sought-after destination for anglers of all ages and abilities. Here are the most popular fish you’ll find.🎣
👉 BASS Black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) are abundant at SML andtypically weigh 2-8 pounds.
👉 STRIPER SML is nationally known for its population of striped bass, which have been stocked here since 1963.
👉 CATFISH Channel, flathead and white catfish can all be found in SML with channel cats being the most popular.
👉 CRAPPIE Crappie are less plentiful here but the size and quality are top-notch. Spring and fall are most productive.
👉 SUNFISH You’ll find plenty of bluegill, redbreast and green sunfish in SML, but they tend to be on the smaller side.
👉 PERCH SML supports populations of yellow perch and white perch, with the white variety being more common.
