Reminder that we are no longer the public boat launch for Annabessacook lake. For the last several years we have allowed access to the boat launch at no cost while the new state launch was being built. If you would still like to use our launch there is a fee and will be open may 15th to October 1st.

Did someone say "free ice cream"? This SATURDAY, JULY 9, between 12 - 4pm, look for a pontoon boat adorned with banners for the Annabessacook Lake Improvement Association and Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed. Representatives from both groups will be on board, ready to pull up to your dock and hand you a cool, refreshing treat while answering any questions you have about the work being done by these two valuable advocacy organizations.

While they'll be thrilled to accept any donations or membership fees -- the ice cream is FREE!

Holiday Boat Parade

As seen in the Advertiser! Come and join us for our 3rd Annual Independence Day Boat Parade -- details below.

06/13/2022

Our good friends at Augusta West Kampground are again going to offer public access to their boat launch. We are ALL remaining optimistic that the new launch will be completed in time for next season's boating. ALIA will share details as they become available.

Please note the campground will open public access a little later this season than in past years, due to weather conditions -- April 25th is opening day.

HUGE thanks to the Malmstens and their crew for making this access possible for the last several years. if you use their launch or know of others who do, please remind them to be courteous and respectful to the rules the campground has established to ensure proper use of the launch and show respect to the paying campers and their sites on the property.

Hello to all our lake residents and seasonal visitors –

Have you seen the loons returning to the lake? Even before the ice was completely gone – the loons started to arrive!

A project is underway to focus on the restoration and productivity of loons on lakes across the state. Maine Audubon is leading the effort, along with help from Maine Lakes, Lakes Environmental Association, the Penobscot Nation, and the Biodiversity Research Institute. Annabessacook Lake has been identified as one of the lakes experiencing low loon productivity over the last five years. While we regularly see adult loons, we haven't seen many chicks.

These organizations are supporting this important program by engaging volunteers in four efforts:
• Placing artificial nests (rafts);
• Monitoring productivity of loon rafts;
• Expanding Fish Lead-Free programs to reduce lead tackle use and related loon mortality;
• Launching a Loon Rangers Program to reduce disturbance to loons and increase nesting success through education and outreach.

The goal for Annabessacook’s first year of involvement is to conduct some very specific and detailed tracking of the loons and their environment: nest locations; counts of pairs, immature loons and chicks; behavioral observations. This documentation will help to determine if an artificial nest will be helpful in promoting loon propagation on our lake as well as the appropriate placement of an artificial nest.

What can you do to help? Several area lake residents and lake lovers have already responded to the call for volunteers, but more help is both needed and welcome!

***The most important thing you can do is to report if you see a territorial pair of loons (i.e., potentially breeding) establishing a nest, with as precise a location as you can. IMPORTANT: Do NOT approach the loons or any nest; please observe from a distance. (Click on the link in the comments to view an informative brochure from Maine Audubon – “How Close is Too Close?”)

Both Maine Audubon and Maine Lakes have additional information regarding this program:
• Maine Audubon – Loon Restoration Project (link in comments)
• Maine Lakes – Maine’s Loon Productivity Project (link in comments)

Several of the area volunteers have already begun the construction of an artificial nest (raft), which is expected to be deployed at the beginning of next year’s season.

If you have further questions about this program, please feel free to contact Maine Audubon or Maine Lakes.

If you spot a possible territorial pair or a nest, or would like to be involved with this project – please contact ALIA at our email address and we’ll share this information with the volunteers already engaged with the project: [email protected].

Our good friends at Augusta West Kampground have opened for the season! The Malmstens have again graciously made the campground boat launch accessible to the public for another season (as construction on the new "official" boat launch has finally gotten underway this year). We thank them for their continued generosity!

The Malmstens have done a great job prepping Augusta West for another season -- and ALIA has made our own, small contribution to the landscaping...

***The fall drawdown of Annabessacook Lake will begin on Monday, September 20th***
At that time the Monmouth Public Works Department will remove several boards from the dam opening. Periodic removal of additional boards will follow until the drawdown goal is reached. Above-normal rainfall can cause high water conditions that hamper board removal.
The current lake level is, surprisingly, still at full pond level. The goal of the drawdown is to have the lake surface a couple of feet below full pond during the winter. Be aware that this goal is difficult to meet due to the small discharge capacity of the dam or***ce. The rate at which the lake level will drop will be monitored but cannot be predicted because it is highly dependent on the absence or presence of rainfall. In three of the past four years, the lake level dropped 5 to 6 inches in the first two weeks of drawdown (vertical depth of water, not distance from shore); last year the level only dropped 3 inches in the first few weeks due to rain.
The purpose of the drawdown is to keep the lake at a lower level during winter to help protect against ice damage and to provide storage area for rapid snowmelt and spring runoff. The Cobbossee Watershed District and the Town of Monmouth coordinate the drawdown.

Our fireworks show for tonight is still ON
The show must go on.

The only reason for cancellation will be steady rain/wind.
