An African Hawk-Eagle (Aquila spilogaster) sits like a statue, silently and intensely scanning a waterhole in the African Savannah, ready in ambush for any unsuspecting birds coming to drink. Especially keen on game birds such as guineafowl and francolins, this one sat patiently for over an hour before a failed hunt scared all its potential prey away, so it resumed its perch for another long vigil.

A prehistoric-looking Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) silently stalks the shallows of Lake Albert, Uganda, during a spectacular trip to Semliki National Park and its surrounds. Apart from the highly sought-after sighting of the rarely seen Shoebill, the area boasts world-class birding, rare primates and forest elephants, not far north of Chimpanzee and Gorilla habitats. An African Wild Dog pup (Lycaon pictus) discovers the world outside of its den.

Rare to see in the wild, but when wild dogs do move through an area of the African Savannah, excitement levels go up 10x!
I once loosely followed a hunting pack during their relentless morning activity, along with my 2 safari guests, and we witnessed the pack affect the lives of 12 different species of mammal in the space of an hour.
A breathtaking experience!

Sad news…an inspiration. A lifetime dedicated to doing immeasurable good! Jane Goodall was truly a world renowned figure to look up to for multiple generations. We at On Safari - in will celebrate and remember her for years to come.

The Jane Goodall Institute has learned this morning, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, that Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute has passed away due to natural causes. She was in California as part of her speaking tour in the United States.

Dr. Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world.

It's World Ranger Day!
It may seem like there’s a day for everything these days, but that doesn’t dilute the importance of what they represent. World Ranger Day is truly deserving of its own day. Rangers risk their lives every day to protect the world’s wilderness areas, and that’s worth celebrating!

It’s also a reminder of the ongoing need to support them. Donating can help provide essential training, proper pay, and funding for crucial operations. Today, on Safari – in has donated to African Parks, and we encourage others who are able to do the same to support these incredible guardians of nature.
