Day 8 and 9

Our last full day in Ireland was spent taking in the city of Dublin! We had our farewell dinner at the Harbourmaster Bar and Restaurant where we enjoyed an Ireland staple beef stew and a lemon cream cheese dessert. Our final hotel stay was at the picturesque Johnstown Estate Hotel and Spa where we were able to enjoy the hot tub after a full day of walking. This morning, we boarded our plane to Minneapolis at 2:30pm. We have now landed and are heading home. Overall, we had an amazing experience! We want to thank our tour director Helen, bus driver Kasson, and amazing travelers. The students were recognized several times for being engaged and inquisitive. We would highly recommend traveling abroad to others! It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about other countries and their cultures. EF planned and executed a very unique experience for us and our expectations were exceeded.

Day 7

We started the day an Glengowla Mines Family Farm Experience. Participants explored an old lead mine and then watched a sheep dog demonstration. Pip was still in training, but was very impressive as a shepherd. Lambs were held; it was precious. From there it was a drive to Kylemore Abbey for lunch and a quick walk of the grounds of this Benedictine Abbey. The weather was gorgeous. Next we stopped at an oyster farm and got a lesson in oysters from seed to sale, and a chance to sample fresh oysters—for those willing. Students and adults were quizzed on what we learned and also raced to pack a shipping box of oysters. As per nearly all the farms participating in the tour, diversification has been key in the economical survival of our destinations—tourism is obviously a large segment of that diversification. We were graciously welcomed everywhere we went.

Stay tuned for our final day in Ireland.

Day 6

Sunday morning saw our biggest walk run group yet; seven people started the day with a few laps around the property for our last day at Mount Wolseley. This was followed by a long bus ride to the Cliffs of Moher with a stop along the way for snacks at wayside rest / Obama museum. We had a very windy day exploring the cliffs. Our tour guide Helen provided us a short walking tour of Galway where we enjoyed a little shopping and more food! University of Galway provided our accommodations with individual apartments on a beautiful campus. Before settling in for the night, many took advantage of a common space game room. Stay tuned for day 7!

Day 5:

Started out the morning walking through the Irish Veteran Vintage car show hosted by our hotel. We then visited The Village at Wheelocks strawberry farm. While visiting the farm, we were able to learn how they plant, grow, and harvest their strawberries. As you can tell from the pictures, we also had our fair share of tasting them. After lunch and visiting with the animals, we traveled over to Redmond Farms to learn about their beef cattle and vegetable farming operation. They sustainably grow the food needed to feed their cattle and food served at their hotels. They did a great job demonstrating how to do farm to fork. We enjoyed a hands-on planting activity before we left the farm. We had a farm to fork meal at the hotel restaurant and then headed back to our hotel for our second supper. They sure do feed us well. After indulging in all the amazing food, a few went out for an evening stroll and some good fun in the park. We have been cheerfully welcomed at every tour. Our farm liaison commended our students for being so polite. And Minnesotans are smart! We answered a question about a tree that has not been correctly identified on tour in three years.

Day 4:

To start out the day we toured Highbank Orchards where we learned about their history in organic farming. We had the opportunity to taste several of their delicious products. After the orchard we headed back into Kilkenny for a quick lunch. We then traveled to Lynch Family Dairy where we learned about a typical small family dairy operation in Ireland. A few travelers took advantage of the golf course and booked a tee time. After the evening meal, a group went on an evening walk into Tullow for some snacks.

Stay tuned for day 5.

Day 3:

Today we had an excellent guided tour of the Irish National Stud Farm in Kildare where we learned about the racehorse industry and toured their beautiful Japanese gardens. We then went into Kilkenny to tour the castle. After the tour we had free time to explore the beautiful city and go shopping! We finished the night at our grand hotel with a nice meal and walk around the golf course. Oh—and a group of three started the day with a 2 mile run on Global Running Day!

Stay tuned for day 4 adventures!

Day 2:

We started the morning off with a guided tour of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the city and Phoenix Park. Free time for lunch was spent in Dublin City with a little shopping thrown in. We visited EPIC (Every Person is Connected) museum to learn about Irish Emigration. We ended our day with a dinner and a traditional Irish song and dance show at Taylor’s Three Rock. There was significant audience participation, as well as one of our explorers even learned how to play the bodhran drum.

Stay tuned for day 3 adventures.

Day 1 Recap:

Montevideo Explorers boarded Aer Lingus Monday at 6:00pm. We arrived in the Dublin airport at 8am and hit the city center at 10am. Our tour director gave us a walking tour of the city to get acquainted with the spots to see. After a day of exploring Dublin, we ate dinner as a group at Lundy Foot’s and traveled to our hotel in Dundalk.

It was a full day of exploration. Stay tuned for more adventures! 🇮🇪
