EDITED: The city has stated that they will preserve and commemorate the Davis children's burial sites.
-----
If you love Montgomery and its rich history, please consider attending the next City Council meeting to help let the city know that our history is worth preserving. It is at 6pm next Tuesday, May 26th at City Hall on Old Plantersville Rd.
In the corner of the white picket fence surrounding the Nathaniel Hart Davis Museum sit two small memorial stones placed by the Historical Society. They commemorate the children of Nathaniel and Sarah Davis — a stillborn daughter and Nathaniel Hart Davis Jr., a son who died at just five months old.
The children are not buried beside the memorial stones. Their actual burial site lies on the adjacent property now owned by the city.
The city plans to build a park on that property, and a park there could be a wonderful addition to Montgomery’s historic district. However, the current plans include paving over the burial site of the Davis children for parking.
While the city says the exact burial locations are unknown, both oral and written history tell us that Sarah buried her children beneath the branches of the great oak tree and planted lilies over their graves. We know where that oak tree stood — its massive stump was only removed last year — and lilies have continued to bloom in that location year after year.
We are asking the city to respectfully redesign the park layout so the children’s resting place can be preserved and properly recognized for future generations.
History matters. Preservation matters. Please come stand with us.
