Destination Freedom Walk
The Center for Anti-Slavery Studies, led by Cindy Wooden hosted the Destination Freedom Walk recently in downtown Montrose, and the 1818 House served as a nice backdrop for part of the walking tour!

During this fascinating walk through Montrose folks heard the history of the Underground Railroad, the Anti-Slavery movement and the amazing history of Susquehanna County Black residents.

Endless Mountains Heritage Region partnered with the Waverly Community House of Waverly, PA to bring its Destination Freedom: Underground Railroad Walking Tours to the counties of Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties.

Thanks to Staci Wilson of the The Susquehanna County Promotion and Tourism Agency for capturing photos of the tour and the 1818 House.

The Center for Anti-Slavery Studies (CASS) works to promote historical research, preserve relevant history, and educate the public on the activities surrounding the Anti-Slavery Movement in Northeastern Pennsylvania. CASS is housed in a historical 1816 home and the site of the former Silver Lake Bank in Montrose, PA.

🇺🇸 250 Years of America. 208 Years of History.

This Fourth of July, weekend was spent with Susan Quick Nilsen Kerry Quick Kelly John Kelly and myself we stepped back in time by staying in the historic 1818 House in Montrose, Pennsylvania—living much as early Americans did during one of the hottest summers on record.

No air conditioning. Just opened doors with evening breezes, thick hand-built walls, and an original hearth that has warmed and fed generations for more than two centuries.

One of the best parts? Spending each evening on the porch, rocking in our chairs, sharing stories, laughter, and memories with family and friends as the sun slipped behind the Endless Mountains. In a world that moves so fast, it was a reminder that some of life’s greatest moments don’t need technology—just good company and a historic porch.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, it reminds you how resilient those who came before us truly were. Sometimes the best way to appreciate history is to live it, even if only for a few days.

Here’s to preserving the places that tell our nation’s story.
