Because tourism development is economic development and because you can’t have successful tourism business development without having successful tourist development, the Glades County Economic Development Council, Inc. launched the tourism development initiative in 2008, campaigning for adoption of the tourism development tax or bed tax, which is a 2 percent fee collected by motels, RV parks etc. who serve visitors who stay there less than six months and a day.
The referendum was approved and as part of the process the Board of County Commissioners appointed members of a tourism development committee who devised the original tourism development plan. Members of that committee, the composition of which has changed over the years, then became the council. Members are formally appointed to the TDC by the BOCC.
The Glades County TDC is a Glades County BOCC appointed advisory group, and under the statute is comprised of nine members: one commissioner, representing the county; one city councilman, no more than four operators of accommodations (motels, RV parks or campgrounds) and the remainder must be Glades County residents (voters) who are engaged in tourism businesses or otherwise have an interest in tourism development in Glades County. The TDC oversees the way the bed tax, which is collected by the Department of Revenue and then distributed monthly to the county, is used to promote tourism in Glades County.
We do this by promoting events and attractions via the TDC website www.visitglades.org and Facebook, and a variety of print media including brochures, magazine inserts and video. Visitors to Glades County can pick up brochures and other marketing materials about Glades County events, attractions, food and lodging at the Glades County EDC office, 998 US Hwy 27, Moore Haven, FL 33471
The Glades County TDC typically meets the first Friday of each month in the commission chambers of the Glades County Courthouse, 500 Avenue J, Moore Haven, FL 33471. Meetings are open to the public.
