May 7th is one of our favorite days of the whole year here at Hills of Africa!

Why? Because we get to celebrate not one, but two, of our amazing team members, Sandy and Sam!! Not only do they share the same day, but they were born in the same year AND the same country!! Talk about soul sisters!

Have an amazing day you two xx 💖

Take a moment to breathe in the beauty and listen to the soothing roar of Victoria Falls. There’s a reason it’s called “The Smoke That Thunders,” a name that captures both its power and serenity.

Planning a trip to Africa? Whether it’s your first safari or your fifth, packing with the planet in mind makes a huge difference.

Small swaps—like choosing solid toiletries or a refillable water bottle—can help protect the landscapes, wildlife, and communities that make Africa so special. Here are some easy, eco-friendly swaps to help you travel more responsibly without sacrificing comfort or style.

🛍️Bring reusable tote bags with you for buying souvenirs, snacks or for separating laundry! No plastic necessary.
🍶Bring your reusable water bottle with you. Some lodges will let you use their water bottles, as plastic bottles are banned at most lodges, but make sure you have yours for any travel days!
👟Skip new “just for safari” shoes and instead bring your favorite comfortable and sturdy hiking shoes, better for the environment and better for your feet!
👕Same with shoes, don’t buy a whole new wardrobe of low-quality clothes that you will only wear once. Instead bring quality clothing items that you will wear again once you return home again.
🪥Plastic toothbrushes are one of the most thrown away item. Instead use a bamboo toothbrush, or better, bring your electric toothbrush from home!
🧴Instead of buying new travel sized toiletries every time you travel, buy reusable silicone toiletries once and fill them up forever! Better still, use solid shampoo bars and conditioners for a package free option at home and on the go!

Save this post for packing for your next trip!!

"If you want to know how you can support conservation efforts, ask us!

We are all about conservation and community efforts, in fact, we are founders of Uganda Wildlife - a conservation not-for-profit that works in Uganda to help communities which in turn help the conservation of animals.

For example, some of our projects are building “Lion Bomas”. A boma means house, and our bomas are built in communities surrounding the national parks, for communities to house their goats, sheep, cattle etc, to protect them from predators.

This is important in Africa, because if a community loses a goat they lose their food, and often retaliation takes place where that community member would go and kill the lion.

Other projects that we get involved with are building classrooms, buying desks for schools in the communities surrounding the national park, or training women how to bead, carve, and weave so that they are able to sell their wares and look after their families.

There are so many ways to get involved and be a part of change. And, just by going to Africa, you are helping to support wildlife and community conservation efforts."

Looking for a meaningful way to support conservation? Adopt an African animal!

Symbolically adopting an animal is a powerful way to contribute to anti-poaching, habitat preservation, and vital conservation programs.

When you adopt, you’ll receive a personalized certificate, updates, and unique keepsakes such as photos and fact sheets about the animal you’re helping. We recommend choosing reputable organizations like World Wildlife Fund, African Wildlife Foundation, or specialized programs such as the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Cheetah Conservation Fund, or Save the Rhino Trust to make sure your donation goes directly to impactful conservation work.

Adopt an African animal and watch it grow, knowing that you positively contributed to the environment's future!

Let us know, have you ever adopted an animal for yourself or a loved one?

This is the year to step up as stewards of our environment. If our leaders won’t protect our planet, then it’s up to us to fight for what we love.

- Stand up for wild spaces.
- Support the causes you believe in.
- Donate, speak out, take action.

Change won’t just happen around us — it has to happen through us.

Let’s make 2025 the year we stop hoping and start doing.

Earth Month Spotlight | Save Wildlife Uganda

This week, we’re proud to spotlight Save Wildlife Uganda, a dedicated team working to protect Uganda’s iconic wildlife and the communities living alongside it.

Through education, advocacy, and boots-on-the-ground conservation, Save Wildlife Uganda focuses on reducing human-wildlife conflict, protecting endangered species like elephants and lions, and empowering local communities through sustainable livelihood programs.

Their work not only safeguards Uganda’s biodiversity but also helps build a future where people and wildlife thrive together.

We’re proud to work with partners who care deeply, and we’d love for you to be part of it. If you’re inspired to get involved or visit one of their community projects, we’d love to help you plan it into your journey. Reach out to us, or contact them directly to learn more!

Welcome to Mlevu Rhino Camp 🦏 Imvelo Safari Lodges

Looking to make a meaningful impact while on safari? Introducing Mlevu Rhino Camp, a new voluntourism experience in Zimbabwe that combines wildlife conservation, community engagement, and immersive cultural exchange.

Set just outside Hwange National Park within the Mlevu Imvelo Rhino Sanctuary, this rustic camp offers guests the chance to work alongside local conservationists and support rural communities through hands-on, purpose-driven activities.

You’ll join in on things like:
- Rhino behavior monitoring & anti-poaching patrols
- Tracking wildlife and removing snares
- Community gardening and school programs
- Cooking and sharing meals with local families
- Water pump maintenance for wildlife
- Guided walks with community scouts..and so much more.

Programs run from 1 to 3 weeks (or even a few days as an add-on to your safari), and are open to small groups, student teams, or adventurous solo travelers looking to give back and go deeper.

We’re proud to support experiences like this—designed to benefit both travelers and the local people and ecosystems they visit.

Want to include Mlevu Rhino Camp in your adventure? Message us to request a booking or click the link below for more information!
