Fourteen Port City Paddle Club members embarked on an expedition to the Quarry Lakes this past weekend.
Of those in attendance, thirteen made a dry escape from the White Oak Rapids, following one unintended wet exit and safe recovery.
Twelve members of varied experience levels arrived at the primary destination ahead of schedule. Ten were present for an island side photo op. All took a much needed celebratory rest before freely dividing into two separate exploration and return parties.
From there, seven members managed to complete the full Quarry Lakes circuit, passing before “the Witch’s Face” to arrive at the old ramps.
Ultimately, five adventurers scaled the summit of “Mount Maysville,” earning themselves an unmatched view of this remote section of the interior Crystal Coast. All members experienced a safe and engaging return journey, each having met and surpassed the goals they set for themselves.
There were two confirmed alligator sightings, of an estimated three and seven feet in length.
Port City Paddle Club leads an active role in the greater Crystal Coast Kayak Community, and was joined by fellow Community members from the New Bern-based Twin Rivers Paddle Club - New Bern for this expedition.
Port City Paddle Club expeditions are designed for intermediate to advanced paddlers, and occur beyond Morehead City, the Club’s base of operations. Other events, such as leisure paddles, races, and campouts, are hosted year round.
Additionally, as daylight allows, the Club meets every Monday at 6:00pm at West Beaufort / Town Creek Water Access for a beginner-friendly paddle. Rentals and other services are available on site at each event, provided by our sponsor, Trusty Sail & Paddle. Rentals must be arranged in advance.
On-Demand expeditions and tours can be scheduled through Jimmy, any time, at Trusty Sail & Paddle. Jimmy can be reached at [email protected], or 252-424-0577.
