Today we’re celebrating Jessie, the spirited cowgirl who has captured the hearts of Toy Story fans around the world.
Described by Disney Parks as “the roughest, toughest cowgirl in the West,” Jessie first rode into action in 1999’s Toy Story 2 as a vintage pull-string cowgirl doll from the classic Woody’s Roundup television show. Voiced by Joan Cusack, Jessie quickly became one of Pixar’s most beloved characters thanks to her fearless personality, endless energy, and unforgettable emotional depth.
Although Jessie is always ready for adventure, her story is also one of Pixar’s most touching. Once cherished by a little girl named Emily, Jessie experienced the heartbreak of being outgrown and left behind. The emotional “When She Loved Me” sequence remains one of the franchise’s most powerful moments, revealing the vulnerability behind her cheerful smile.
Despite those painful memories, Jessie never stops caring for others. She is brave, loyal, and always willing to put her friends first, whether she's racing to save Woody, facing danger alongside Buzz, or encouraging the rest of the toys when times get tough.
Over the years, Jessie has grown into one of the leaders of the Toy Story family. In Toy Story 4, Woody entrusts her with his sheriff badge, a symbolic moment that recognizes her courage and leadership. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for the cowgirl who once feared being forgotten.
Fans won't have to wait long to see her again. Pixar has confirmed that Jessie will return alongside Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang in ** Toy Story 5 **, continuing the adventures of one of animation’s most beloved toy families.
Jessie’s story is about resilience, friendship, and finding the strength to keep going even after heartbreak. That spirit is what has made her a favorite for generations of viewers and one of Pixar’s most memorable characters.
Happy birthday, Jessie! May your day be filled with friendship, laughter, and plenty of adventures.
