A shocking and unforgettable sight for these young boys as innocently they enjoyed fishing Tuesday afternoon: Black Hawk helicopters dipping into a local pond as crews worked to battle the Rocky Canyon Fire raging in the mountains above Morgan, Utah.

Shortly after this video was captured, fire crews arrived, escorted the fishermen from the area, and secured the pond for helicopter water-bucket operations.

We are again grateful for the brave men and women protecting our valley!

Here’s the latest update from Morgan County Emergency Services as of Thursday afternoon, August 13, 2026:

“The rain overnight and throughout today has cooled portions of the fire and gave crews a favorable start to the day. Acreage burned stands at 15,662 acres and is 29% contained.
Today’s main hazards are lightning and the effects of increased moisture. There is concern for flooding with moving rocks and debris along Hwy 66 particularly down Red Rock Canyon and Rocky Canyon. We have been preparing since yesterday with barriers strategically placed by UDOT at the base of Red Rock Canyon to help divert potential water flow away from the homes right there.
We had many volunteers from local LDS wards, the Morgan County Fire department and North Summit Fire District filling sand bags last night for use by any resident who may be impacted by a potential flood. Sand bags have been placed at the bottom of Red Rock Canyon for easier access for the residents along that stretch of Hwy 66, the rest are just to the north of the county shed here in the city by the sand pile where we fill the bags.
The National Weather Service is predicting we will see a storm with heavy rain around 2:30 and a heavy thunderstorm between 5 and 8 p.m. today with wind gusts of 50-60 mph, heavy rain and potential hail. Anyone near the burn scar feeling the need for sandbags can pick them up at any time at that location by the county shed (near 380 N Industrial Drive).”

Incident Update from Morgan County Emergency Management

As of 0900 today, 8/11, the residents that were evacuated on Hwy 66 from Whites Crossing to East Canyon Dam will be allowed back into their homes.
Hwy 66 will remain closed at the junction with Morgan Valley Drive to all but local traffic. East Canyon State Park remains closed as does Hwy 65 from East Canyon down to West Henefer Road.
The current acreage of the fire is mapped at 13,601 and is now 23% contained. The increase in humidity overnight helped moderate the fire growth and behavior. The Hwy 66 corridor from Hogsback towards Whites Crossing is holding strong and is where the containment was attained.
You may see more fire crew activity on the North (Morgan) end of the fire today along the tops of the ridges as they work and patrol the perimeter of the fire to ensure containment on that end.
The cloud coverage will help cool the fire area throughout the morning. Gusty winds later in the day could cause increased and less predictable fire behavior.

🚨 ROCKY CANYON FIRE UPDATE

The Rocky Canyon Fire continues to grow in the East Canyon area and is currently estimated at 2,800 acres with 0% containment. Fire crews are actively working to secure the fire perimeter using ground crews, dozers, line construction and aircraft.

A GO evacuation order is in effect for homes from Whites Crossing to East Canyon Dam due to a firefighter burn operation. Residents in this area should leave immediately and follow directions from emergency personnel. An evacuation shelter is available at the Morgan High School Trojan Century Center, 699 E. Young St.

Residents in nearby areas should remain alert and be prepared to evacuate if conditions change. Gather important documents, medications, essential items and emergency supplies, make sure your vehicles are ready to go, and make arrangements for pets and livestock.

SR-66 is closed, and SR-65 from Henefer is also closed. The north end of East Canyon State Park, including Dixie Creek Campground and day-use areas, is under an evacuation order.

Please avoid the fire area, follow official evacuation instructions, and do not interfere with firefighting operations.

We will continue to share verified updates as they become available.
