Coolest spot near Madison. Literally. 😆

Forecast says 80°. Cave of the Mounds says 50°.

And honestly? That sounds like a pretty good deal right now. 😉

Just outside Mount Horeb, this underground world stays 50 degrees year-round...even when Wisconsin decides to turn into a sauna. Between the winding cave paths, underground pools, and rock formations that genuinely don’t feel real, it’s one of those places that makes you forget you’re still in the Midwest.

The best part? You can go from sitting in traffic near Madison to standing underground in a cave less than an hour later.

Not bad for a summer day trip.

Turns out the best patios near Madison aren’t actually in Madison 🤩

The small towns around the city have been quietly winning the patio game... no wait, and the kind of places that make you forget you have anywhere else to be. ☀️

Brix Cider:  Mount Horeb. Right next to the Military Ridge trailhead. Cold cider, warm patio, trolls nearby. Need we say more?

Buck & Honey’s: Mount Horeb. Local favorite. Great food, great patio, perfect for date night or GNO!

Paoli Schoolhouse: Paoli. Fine dining on the banks of the Sugar River.

Seven Acre Dairy: Paoli. Dog-friendly patio along the river.

Riley Tavern: Riley. One of the best hidden gems outside Madison.

Dirty Dog: New Glarus. Cold drinks, good vibes, and Swiss countryside as your backdrop.

Ope Haus Pub: Barneveld. The bloody mary here? Worth the drive alone.

What if your bike ride came with trolls, cider, and 40 miles of scenery? 🚲

The Military Ridge State Trail runs right through the heart of Mount Horeb and it might just be the best ride in Wisconsin. Rolling hills, open prairie, quiet farmland, zero car traffic, and a trailhead right in downtown. Yeah, it’s that good. 👀

Pick your ride:
🔵 Mount Horeb → Riley (13 mi round trip) Easy, scenic, kid-friendly. Prairie views + zero stress.

🔴 Mount Horeb → Blue Mounds (12 mi round trip) Rolling Driftless terrain + Cave of the Mounds on the way back. A fan favorite for a reason.

🟡 Dodgeville → Blue Mounds (19 mi one-way) Big ridge views. Big sky. Big payoff. Shuttle back and thank yourself later.

Clock your miles. Then come back to town for a cider flight at Brix, handmade chocolate at Sjolinds, and a troll hunt on the Trollway. No rush. You’ve earned it. 🧌

30 minutes from Madison. Trolls, chocolate, and a main street you’ll want to wander for hours. You’re welcome. 🤩

Mount Horeb isn’t a detour. It’s the whole point.

We’re talking independent shops packed with one-of-a-kind finds, local makers, artisan chocolate that will ruin you for anything else, Norwegian-inspired pastries, and a cider flight waiting for you.

Speaking of the Trollway . . . yes, there are dozens of hand-made troll sculptures scattered around town. You’ll spot one before you even park. The kids will lose their minds. You won’t be mad about it either.

This is the kind of Main Street that’s walkable, unhurried, and genuinely worth the trip.

Come for a few hours. Leave planning your next visit. 🧌

The brand with 60+ stores across America started in a small Wisconsin town with only one stop light …

Mount Horeb is home to Duluth Trading Company's flagship store (the original location that launched it all). When they opened here in 2010, its success gave them the confidence to expand nationwide. Come see where it started.

Small towns aren't boring. You've just been going to the wrong ones. 😆

Mount Horeb, Wisconsin has dozens of hand-made trolls, one stoplight, and a downtown that looks like it was lifted straight out of a storybook… historic storefronts, tree-lined streets, and trolls peering out from every corner. The whole thing is walkable, parking is free, and the people? The kind who actually say hello. Who remember your name by the second cup of coffee. Who will give you a full list of their favorite spots before you even ask.

Spend your afternoon wandering locally owned shops, stopping for chocolate that has no business being this good, and grabbing a drink at a cidery or winery with actual views. Then hit the trails — the Driftless Region doesn't look like the rest of the Midwest. Ancient ridges, river valleys, the kind of scenery that makes you put your phone down and just look.

It's 2.5 hours from Chicago, 1.5 hours from Milwaukee, 30 minutes from Madison. You could be here by lunch.

No reservations required. No itinerary needed. Just show up, find your troll, and remember what a real weekend feels like. 🧌

On the scenic and historic Donald Farm in (the Troll Capital of the World) a strange and beautiful gathering takes shape: a night of music, firelight, and collective release.

The valley will come alive with sound of:

* — multiple Native American Music Award winner, praised by The New York Times as “a promising young storyteller… with an alluring dark streak.”
* — a genre-bending force of charisma and energy, blending hip-hop, glam, funk, and rock into an electrifying live show.
* — celebrating 30 years of New Orleans-style funk and explosive, joy-filled sound.
* — a roaming celebration of rhythm, community, and movement throughout the grounds.
* New Glarus Alphorns — massive, majestic horns calling across the valley in a farewell fit for trolls.
* Caravan Gypsy Swing Ensemble — virtuosic, globe-touring swing to stir the fire in your feet.
* — foot-stomping old-time energy with rich harmonies and soul.
* — a deep, meditative, ecstatic dance to close the night in release and renewal.

And of course… the fire.

As night falls, this year we will gather around multiple trolls to be set ablaze.

Flames will rise. Sparks will lift into the sky. The valley will glow, and somehow we will all feel a little more alive.

Come for the music. Stay for the fire. Leave a little lighter.
