Another Shasta season in the books. 🙌

A big thank you to all the climbers who joined me on the mountain this year. From the dusty volcanic trailheads to the alpine starts, you put in the work and it paid off!

We wrapped up the mountaineering season with a 75% overall summit success rate while maintaining a 100% safety record. That’s the balance we’re most proud of.

We just returned from a successful trip on my favorite side of the mountain. Grit, perseverance and determination paid off for the boys after we rode out one of the most epic electrical storms in our tents. The thunderstorms and gale force wind that persisted most of the night then abruptly stopped just 45 minutes prior to our scheduled alarm of 12:45am on our summit morning. Congratulations to the Gourji boys!

Conditions Report! May 15, 2024. Summit of Shastina, Mount Shasta's satellite cone, and a ski descent of the South Face. Did you know? Shastina is the third tallest peak in the Cascade Range after Mount Rainier and Mount Shasta. A special place and far less frequented side of the mountain.

Beautiful sunny weather lately and a healthy snowpack here in Mt Shasta City, California. The climbing and skiing season on the mountain will go strong into July this year. Conditions Report! April 10, 2024. The climbing and ski mountaineering season has began on Mount Shasta. 🚨https://climbshasta.com/2024/04/12/spring-has-begun-mt-shasta/

It's mid April and in Mt Shasta it's definitely starting to feel like spring has sprung here in northern California. After a slow start to the 2023/24 winter in California, El Nino ended up delivering a deep and moist snowpack to the upper mountain on Mt Shasta. And unlike last year, this year, the spring skiing and summer mountaineering season on Avalanche Gulch and the West Face will go strong into late June. The best time for a summit climb or a summit ski descent is usually May through June.

The entrance and the upper slopes of the West Face are in great condition! I have skied the West Face close to maybe ten times now and the conditions on this day are some of the best I've found them in. At about 2pm, I clicked into my skis and skied smooth, edge-able, and fun windbuff snow for the first 500 vertical feet. Below this, the snow surface gives way to 4,000 feet of soft and playful corn snow all the way to the valley floor below. I did not regret my decision and I felt lucky to have this entire side of the mountain to myself in such great conditions.
