LEMURS, LEMURIANS AND MT. SHASTA!

In 1864, zoologist Philip Sclater published The Mammals of Madagascar in the Quarterly Journal of Science. He was puzzled by a curious mystery in the fossil record: lemur remains had been discovered in both India and Madagascar, yet none had been found in Africa or the Middle East.

Sclater proposed a fascinating explanation—that India and Madagascar were once connected by a much larger ancient landmass. He called this hypothetical lost continent “Lemuria,” inspired by the lemur fossils that sparked his theory.

While science eventually took a very different path with the discovery of plate tectonics, the name Lemuria took on a life of its own. Over time, it became woven into the legends and spiritual traditions surrounding Mt. Shasta, where stories tell of an ancient Lemurian civilization hidden within the mountain.

Today, the legend continues to draw curious travelers, seekers, and adventurers to Mt. Shasta. Come explore the mountain, walk the landscape, hear the stories, and discover what this mysterious place evokes for you.

Wildflowers are in full bloom!

I hiked to Lower Deadfall Lakes this morning, and the trail was putting on quite a show with colorful wildflowers everywhere. It's a beautiful time to get out and explore the Mount Shasta region.
