In 1946 Julien Bryan premiered the films he made in Mount Vernon to a crowd of "about 600" people at the Memorial Theater.

80 years later, the same films were shown in the same theater...and the number of attendees was roughly the same. And at least five audience members in 2026 had actually appeared in the films made eighty years earlier.

Small Town, USA Returns: A Wartime Film Project Brings Mount Vernon’s Past Back to Life!

A unique piece of Mount Vernon history is coming back to the big screen.

The restored Small Town USA film series, originally created in 1944 as part of a World War II “good neighbor” campaign, captured real residents and everyday life in the community.

From factory workers to school scenes and local elections, the films offer an authentic and sometimes idealized look at small-town America, now returning for a special screening and discussion on April 8th at the Knox Memorial Theater.

As we celebrate America’s 250th, in partnership with America 250-Ohio , we are honoring the theme of Innovation & Industry by sharing the incredible stories of the people who shaped our county.
