Yesterday marked Flag Day, a time to reflect on the history behind the banners that represent us. Right now, the Public Square in Mount Vernon is displaying a direct link to the nation's past.

In the Public Square, alongside a traditional U.S. flag, is a replica of General George Washington’s Commander-in-Chief Standard, which is a deep blue banner with 13 six-pointed white stars that marked his presence on the Revolutionary War battlefields.

Our city was actually named after Washington's famous Virginia estate, Mount Vernon. In a beautiful nod to that heritage, these specific flags originally flew over that very estate before being installed right here in the heart of our downtown.

Today is National Nurses Day, and we’re honoring Ohio-born Civil War nurse Mary Ann Ball, better known as Mother Bickerdyke. This Ohio Historical Marker marks the Mount Vernon birthplace of a woman who, when the Civil War broke out in 1861, went to the soldiers’ aid at age 45. Ignoring rank, protocol and even enemy lines, Mary risked enemy fire during Grant’s Western Campaign and Sherman’s Georgia Campaign, often venturing out at night to search for the fallen. When the war ended and Union armies marched through Washington, D.C., Mother Bickerdyke rode beside generals and colonels, earning cheers from the grateful veterans she served.

Thank you to Knox County Historical Society for a wonderful evening celebrating history and community! The Knox County Historical Society is now open for the season, visit them Thursday-Saturday, 2PM-4PM or call to schedule a tour🇺🇸

In 1946 Julien Bryan premiered the films he made in Mount Vernon to a crowd of "about 600" people at the Memorial Theater.

80 years later, the same films were shown in the same theater...and the number of attendees was roughly the same. And at least five audience members in 2026 had actually appeared in the films made eighty years earlier.
