There's a particular kind of quiet that settles in once you're on the Wengernalpbahn, the yellow and green cog train that climbs out of Lauterbrunnen toward Wengen. It's been running this route since 1893, built specifically to take on a grade too steep for an ordinary train, and the ride still shows its age in the best way. Staubbach Falls appears out the window partway up, one of the seventy-two waterfalls that thunder down this valley, and by the time you reach Wengen, the valley has opened into the kind of alpine meadow that made this route worth the climb in the first place.

Munich prepares for Oktoberfest by returning to where it began in 1810: the wedding celebrations for Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese, marked by horse races on a meadow just outside the city gates. That meadow, the Theresienwiese, will host the 191st Oktoberfest from September 19 to October 4, 2026.

At noon on opening day, Munich’s mayor taps the first keg at Festhalle Schottenhamel, officially opening the festival with the traditional call, “O’zapft is!” The tent is closely associated with this defining Oktoberfest ritual, after which beer service begins across the festival grounds.

Munich’s approved breweries brew Oktoberfest beer specifically for the festival, and reservations at popular tents and peak-time sittings are often secured months in advance.

Anyone can book the camp with the four-poster bed and plunge pool. It photographs beautifully, receives excellent reviews, and by every visible measure, it is an excellent choice. Which is exactly why it is the first option that comes up and precisely why it fills up first.

Few people know that, most Julys, a property 40 minutes north of the camp everyone flocks to overlooks the same crossing with a third of the vehicles and no noticeable difference in the herd. Ask a Greek where to find the real Cyclades, and Santorini is rarely the answer.
