The journey is as extraordinary as the destination.

For our Emperor Penguin Camp expeditions, guests may fly on the legendary Basler BT-67 C-GGSU, affectionately known as “Pinocchio” thanks to its long nose. Built for ice, snow, and extreme conditions, this historic aircraft makes reaching one of Earth’s most remote wildlife encounters possible.

Reaching an emperor penguin colony requires flying deep into one of the most remote regions on Earth. Guests land on the sea ice, step out into crisp polar air, and find themselves in the presence of Antarctica’s most iconic species. The scale of the landscape and the intimacy of the encounter create a contrast that stays with you long after you leave. This is more than wildlife viewing: it’s a connection to a place where nature still writes the rules.

A great friend to many of us in ALE has recently died in Nepal, doing what he loved most—trekking in the mountains with friends. Doug was an extraordinary, larger‑than‑life character: a consummate polar man and an internationally renowned wildlife cameraman whose work earned numerous awards. We are deeply saddened by his loss and send our heartfelt condolences to his family.

The emperor penguin colony moves like a living tide: parents shuffling to protect their chicks, partners calling to one another across the ice, small groups venturing toward open water. Spending time here means witnessing the daily choreography of survival in Antarctica. Every hour brings a new moment: a chick’s first steps, adults returning from the sea, the shifting huddle that keeps the colony warm. It’s a rare privilege to observe a world so untouched and so full of life.

After days of skiing across the high polar plateau, arriving at 90°S is a feeling unlike any other. It’s accomplishment. It’s history. It’s the culmination of a dream that only a few hundred people on Earth have ever realized. At the Pole, you don’t just reach a destination, you join a legacy of exploration.

Only a handful of people each year stand among emperor penguins in their natural habitat. ALE’s expeditions are designed to protect the colony while offering guests an extraordinary opportunity to observe natural behaviors up close: feeding, huddling, chick rearing, and the constant movement that defines colony life. With expert guides ensuring minimal impact and maximum understanding, this is wildlife viewing at its most respectful and unforgettable.

The final 60 nautical miles to the South Pole demand focus, teamwork, and respect for the polar environment. Days are spent navigating sastrugi, managing layers, and finding rhythm in the silence. Nights are spent in expedition tents under a sun that never sets. With ALE’s expert polar guides leading the way, guests experience the challenge of true polar travel, supported by decades of Antarctic expertise and safety.

While many might be worried about being cold in Antarctica, let us showcase how incredible our new rental polar jackets have been this season. These MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT jackets have traveled to the South Pole, to emperor penguin colonies on the coast, and places where many jackets have never gone before. Our guests have been quite impressed at how warm they stay even in windy and snowy polar conditions.
