The PBS Hometowns crew is here! They are filming an upcoming episode featuring our community. They’ll be meeting local folks, hearing our stories and exploring some of the places that make Muskegon County special.

AND they’re also gathering footage for a documentary about the Snurfer🏂

We’re SO excited to have them here and can’t wait to see Muskegon through their (award winning!!!) lens!

🎬 WELCOME, PBS HOMETOWNS, TO OUR HOMETOWN! 💙

They’re here! The PBS Hometowns crew has officially arrived in Muskegon County, and today we got to welcome them at a meet & greet at the The Brewer's Lounge At Pigeon Hill.

County officials, community members and some of the local folks being interviewed for the Hometowns episode and the upcoming Snurfer documentary were there to say hello.

Over the next few days, the crew will be out and about getting to know Muskegon County and the people, places and stories that make this our hometown.

How are you spending Labor Day weekend?

If you're not quite ready to say goodbye to summer, we get it. One more Lake Michigan beach day? A festival or car show? A museum, a little local history, or a movie under the stars?

There are plenty of things to do in Muskegon County this Labor Day weekend, whether you want to pack your schedule or keep it simple.

We pulled together some of our favorite ideas, plus 2026 Labor Day weekend events, museums, seasonal attractions, beaches, and a few helpful planning tips.

Sometimes the best reminders of what makes Muskegon County special come from the people who visit us.

Jim Shackelford and his wife spent six days in Muskegon this August. When we asked what stood out during their stay, his answer made our day.

Here’s what he loved:

💙 Pere Marquette Beach: “The best in Michigan.” He loved the expansive beach, family-friendly atmosphere, easy-to-walk-on sand and the bathhouses with changing rooms.

💙 The trails: He explored P.J. Hoffmaster State Park and Muskegon State Park, including the Dune Trail, where he caught glimpses of both Lake Michigan and Lake Muskegon.

💙 The museums: Jim was reminded that Muskegon is “not just a beach town,” especially after visiting the Muskegon Museum of Art and HerStory of Animation: Mary Blair & Beyond.

💙 Muskegon Farmers Market: Since they did some of their own cooking during their stay, the market became a favorite stop.

💙 Hackley Public Library: He loved the architecture of the historic library.

And perhaps our favorite observation:

💙 “This is a real city.”

Jim appreciated that Muskegon is more than a vacation destination. He noticed the mix of visitors and residents, the diversity of the community, and the feeling that this is a place where people actually live, work and gather year-round.

He even gave a shout-out to something we don't often hear visitors rave about: parking. A long-term beach-area pass and easy-to-find free parking downtown made getting around simple.

Jim, thank you for spending six days with us and taking the time to tell us what you loved about your visit. And thank you for letting us share your photo and words!

We think it's a pretty great reminder that while our beaches may be what first bring people here, they're only part of the story. 💙

🎸 Elvis Costello is coming to Muskegon!

A legendary songwriter. An iconic catalog. And one night at the historic Frauenthal Center.

Elvis Costello brings his “Radio Soul!: The Songs of Elvis Costello From The Early Days to the Late Hours” tour to Muskegon on September 18 at 7:30 PM, joined by his longtime band The Imposters and acclaimed guitarist Charlie Sexton.

The evening will spotlight songs from the first decade of Costello’s career, including favorites like “Alison,” “Watching the Detectives,” “Man Out of Time,” “Brilliant Mistake” and “I Want You,” along with selections from throughout his catalog.

Costello has been making music for nearly five decades, earning a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame along the way.

If Elvis Costello is on your must-see list, this is one to catch. And if you’ve never experienced a concert at the Frauenthal, this is a pretty great reason to go.

This Downtown Muskegon restaurant is doing something a little different.

Think multi-course tasting experiences inspired by the cultures, flavors and stories of Asia, paired with handcrafted cocktails featuring ZINI spirits. Now that sounds like a dinner worth lingering over.

ZINI is currently welcoming guests by reservation during its soft launch, ahead of its September 25 grand opening.

We're excited to see this dining experience take shape and wish the ZINI team a wonderful start and a successful grand opening!

August is ending, but the lake is still warm, the sunsets are still showing off, and summer isn't quite finished with us yet.

Maybe this sunset is reminding us to slow down and linger a little longer.
