Driver Arrested on DWI Charge Following Two-Vehicle Crash on Duck Road

DUCK, N.C. — A driver was arrested following a two vehicle crash on Duck Road (N.C. 12) near Village Table and Tavern on Wednesday evening. The crash involved an Outer Banks Adventures bus and a Jeep Wrangler. The bus was not carrying any passengers. No injuries were reported.

On Wednesday, October 21 at approximately 8:44 p.m., the Duck Fire Department, Duck Police Department and Dare County Emergency Medical Services responded to the crash in the 1300 block of Duck Road. Investigators determined that the northbound Jeep Wrangler crossed the center line and struck the southbound bus at an angle.

The Jeep’s driver, Dean Ertzner, 62, of Chesterfield, Virginia, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired (DWI) and driving left of center. He was incarcerated at the Dare County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.

Both vehicles sustained damage that left them unable to be driven and were towed from the scene by Seto's. The incident temporarily closed Duck Road (NC 12), with traffic diverted onto the multi-use path for approximately one hour.

The Duck Police Department reminds motorists to never drive while impaired. Anyone planning to drink should arrange for a sober driver or find another safe way home.

There is no pending investigation related to this incident.

Last night, our bus was struck nearly head-on as our driver was leaving The Village Table and Tavern in Town of Duck to pick up our The Bachelor & The Bachelorette outing group. Our driver was not at fault. The other vehicle was traveling without its headlights on, and that driver left with law enforcement.

Thankfully, our guests were not on the bus when the accident happened. Our driver was checked out and is okay, and the other driver was able to walk out of their vehicle. By God’s grace, we are grateful this wasn’t worse. ❤️🙏

Our friends at OBX Party Bus were just around the corner dropping off a group at the Gina Sanderlin Norfleet They stepped in to help transport our guests to the Jolly Roger Restaurant and home as scheduled. We cannot thank them enough for being there when we needed them! 🚌❤️

Our bus is repairable and we are working to get that repaired and back on the road as soon as possible.

A heartfelt thank-you to Seto's Towing & Service Center, Towbx, the Duck Fire Department, and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office for all their help.

We know many of you saw the accident and reached out to check on us. Thank you for your concern, kindness, and support.

The Frightful Four OBX showed our guests a FANTASTIC time tonight! 🙌🎃🚌

Those crazy high winds meant we couldn’t safely cross the high-rise bridge to Manteo, so we switched up the route to keep guests safe and not spoil the Halloween fun—and our guests were AWESOME sports about it! 🧡

As an extra surprise, we treated them to a bonus stop at Jolly Roger Restaurant & Bar. Jolly always welcomes our crew, and everything was SO festive! 👻🍹

A HUGE shout-out to Ms. Debbie for getting everyone around safely, to the locations that welcomed us, and to our wonderful guests for rolling with the changes! Mother Nature didn’t spoil this Halloween FUN! 🎃🙌🎃🙌
