100 years ago today, important steps were taken toward creating Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

While the Smokies weren't officially established until 1934, it was on May 22, 1926, that President Calvin Coolidge signed the bill authorizing its creation.

Whether you come to the Smokies to hike the 848 miles of trails, drive the eight scenic auto tours, discover the 22,000+ documented species, or learn about the region’s rich cultural history, thank you for being part of the Smokies story. Your love for this place helps us protect Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the next 100 years and beyond.

A park ranger conducting a routine trail maintenance patrol in Great Smoky Mountains National Park noticed an unnatural metallic glint high up in a rocky outcrop along a little-used side trail.
What he found was a crashed and remarkably preserved small aircraft from 1943 — a U.S. Army Air Forces liaison plane that had been missing for 81 years.
The discovery happened last week near the North Carolina-Tennessee border in a remote, heavily wooded section of the park. Ranger Marcus Hale was clearing storm debris when he spotted twisted metal and fabric caught in the rocks above the trail. After reporting the find and bringing in a specialized recovery team, investigators confirmed it was a 1943 Piper L-4 Grasshopper observation plane that disappeared during a training flight in bad weather in December 1943.
The plane had apparently struck the mountainside and slid into a narrow crevice, where it remained largely protected from the elements. The cold, shaded mountain environment and the way the wreckage wedged between rocks helped preserve large sections of the fabric-covered airframe, instruments, and personal effects of the pilot. Recovery teams carefully documented the site and recovered the pilot’s identification tags, allowing his family — some of whom are still alive — to finally receive closure after more than eight decades.
Aviation archaeologists called the find significant because the plane is largely intact compared to most crash sites from that era. The wreckage is being carefully removed and will be conserved for eventual display at a regional aviation museum honoring World War II training operations in the Southeast.
Park officials have temporarily closed the immediate area for safety while the full recovery takes place. This unexpected discovery has brought renewed attention to the many aircraft that went missing in the Smokies during the war years and provided a long-awaited answer for one pilot’s family.
