Napoleon Historic Walking Tours

Napoleon Historic Walking Tours The best way to discover downtown Napoleon’s historic treasures is on foot with our period dressed interpretive guides. Scott, Henry Ford and Joe E.

Situated on the historic Maumee River, Napoleon, Ohio is a community with roots dating back as early as 1832. Our tours take you through the heart of Napoleon's business district and two residential blocks. The tour includes the developmental history of Napoleon and explores the historical buildings, events, and people of the 19th and early 20th century. You will hear tales of the Miami Erie Canal

, D&I Railroad, S.M. Heller Hospital, Wellington Hotel, Scott/Drury Murder, the Dutch Row Fire of 1879 and much more! We have many unique tours and no two tours are exactly alike! Just as the Maumee River winds it’s way through Northwest Ohio bringing life and vitality in the 21st Century, it brought pioneers and adventurers all the way back to the 1700’s. Names like Simon Girty, General Robert K. Brown tingled on the tongues of Henry County residents as these famous (and infamous) individuals made the county their own. The industrious spirit of our forefathers drove the clearing of the Great Black Swamp. Henry County, and almost all of the extreme corner of Northwest Ohio, was covered in forest land and low lying swamps. Very few were adventurous enough to brave the wilds, but the lure of cheap land and a stake of their own opened the minds of a hard-working few. More and more hearty souls cleared the land and drained the swamps, allowing the world to take advantage of some of the best farmland found anywhere. Transportation spurred growth in the area – both the Miami and Erie Canal and the railroads brought people in and took goods out. Communities like Napoleon, Liberty Center, Deshler and more owe their vitality to the transportation boom of the 1800’s. That boom led prosperous businessmen and individuals to build structures reflecting the styles of the day. The Henry County Courthouse, built in 1880, stands as a beacon to those coming back home to the area. Structures like the Hamler City Hall, rail depots in Liberty Center and Malinta and Giffey Hall in Ridgeville Corners, take you back in time. When you spend time in our communities, stop and allow your senses to travel back to a simpler time. Gas lamps burn, cobble stone roadways ring with hooves, wooden sidewalks crack under the weight of a family doing their weekly shopping – the past can come to life once again! It is our hope that by taking a walking tour with us you will feel and experience this spirit of Northwest Ohio once again! For each tour you will be guided by a period dressed guide who will take you stop-by-stop through historic downtown Napoleon, Ohio. The abbreviation for Napoleon might be Nap-town but these tours will NOT put you to sleep! Proceeds from the tours support the Napoleon Civic Center, the Henry County Historical Society and the tours. DISCLAIMER* Wear appropriate shoes and prepare for the weather.

Juneteenth also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day is an unofficial American holiday and an official Texas state holiday, celebrated annually on the 19th of June in the United States to commemorate Union army general Gordon Granger announcing federal orders in the city of Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, proclaiming that all slaves in Texas were now free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them almost two and a half years earlier and the American Civil War had largely ended with the defeat of the Confederate States in April, Texas was the most remote of the slave states, with a low presence of Union troops, so enforcement of the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent.

A common misconception is that this day marks the end of slavery in the United States. Although this day marks the emancipation of all slaves in the Confederacy, the institution of slavery was still legal and existed in the Union border states after June 19, 1865. Slavery in the United States did not officially end until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States on December 6, 1865, which abolished slavery entirely in all of the U.S. states and territories.
