There she is, the new 400 HP C7 Caterpillar marine engine! A lot of fuel management and electronics upgrades with this engine will have us going faster while using less fuel. And with an additional 50hp over the former Cat 3208 engine.

Transmission (ZF 1.75/1) installed, long story short, to meet warranty specs on the 24 inch prop, we had to go down from a 2/1 rotation down to a 1.75/1 rotation. The engine is rated for a 26 inch prop, but with the way the skeg is designed we have to go with a 24, so the lower gear reduction will allow us to hit top end RPM

A lot of alignment work to be completed as the engine/gear needs a -7 degree angle to meet the shaft, the old engine had a -1 degree angle, so new engine brackets are required ( of course they need to be custom made).

Hoping for a sea trial in a couple weeks!

9 years ago...

This little throwback video takes me right back to where it all began!

A new lobster boat business, two little kids who wanted to help Dad, and a family learning together as we built this dream one trap at a time.

We had no idea what the years ahead would hold.

Today,

our boat is still at the mechanic...undergoing major repairs and many set backs and delays. It's been a long season away from the water, and anyone who runs a seasonal business knows how difficult that can be.

But if there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's that this community has always shown up for us.

So while we wait to get back where we belong, we've been quietly working on an idea inspired by this life on the water...

Not just another seafood business or boat merch, but something that celebrates Rhode Island's coastal heritage, the working waterfront, and the families behind it.

We finally have some movement on the boat. What was supposed to be a couple months has blossomed to 6!

Let's see what else can go wrong! After we found out the transmission could not be rebuilt and had to get a brand new one (4 week delay), the valve for the lobster tanks is rusted open, and we need a new one (1 week delay). The # 3 blade on the prop slide .3 degrees, doesn't seem like much, but will make the boat vibrate, need new one. I got so frustrated trying to Splice the 40 year old wiring, I literally ripped it all out and started from scratch!

Good news, she's a solid hull, stringers, stern and deck are solid, no rot anywhere on the scan. Ripping all the wires out we found the open lead that was discharging the batteries, no more jumping the motor in the mornings! The old CAT 3208 was 320 horse,. The new CAT C7 is 400 Horse, with the new ZF gear and tuned in prop we have the chance at hitting 25 knots based off computer projections, that's waayyy faster than the 8 knots we were doing.

So not what we were expected for the middle of June, still 2 weeks to go probably, we will be ready for the 4th of July come hell or high water and ready to give it our all!

Engine is out, and man was she tired! 14,000 hours! Next we clean up the mess, rewire and re plumb the old girl. Weld in...

Engine is out, and man was she tired! 14,000 hours! Next we clean up the mess, rewire and re plumb the old girl. Weld in new engine mounting plates then strap in the new jet turbine C7 Cat. Hoping for 15-17 knot cruise speed ( with mid 20's top end)which will cut our steaming time in half!

Buoy 101.
1) Purchase an absurdly over priced foam buoy.
2) Run poly 3/8 inch line through opening
3) Lazy splice line to form a loop.
4) Pull loop back into buoy and cut to length with rope
burner.
5) Place plastic support grommet through line.
6) Tie double becket knot.
7) Restart the process 75 times!
8) Tirelessly paint each buoy with 2 coats of 3
different colors
8) Watch Orsted wind turbine construction boats run
over and destroy your buoys
