After spending 49 days traveling across Brazil, one thing became very clear: Brazil is extraordinary, but it rewards careful planning.
Over nearly seven weeks, we traveled through Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, the Amazon, the Pantanal, Lençóis Maranhenses, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Trancoso, Alagoas and more.
We saw firsthand how much seasonality matters, how quickly conditions can change, how limited luxury hotel choices can be in some destinations, and how complicated routing can become in a country this large.
We also came away with some very clear opinions.
For wildlife, we preferred the Pantanal to the Amazon.
For the Amazon, the experience was less about animal sightings and more about the scale, waterways, rainforest and remoteness.
At Lençóis Maranhenses, the difference between our August and September visits was dramatic. In August, the lagoons were full and beautiful. A month later, many were already dry or drying.
And in several destinations, there were far fewer truly high-quality hotel options than many luxury travelers might expect.
We put together a detailed article on what we learned—and how we would now plan Brazil differently for our clients.
