We recently had a Wide Open Outfitters staff hunt, and honestly, it was one of the most fun days of the season.

Our lodge is known for our staff. Between the kitchen crew, scouts, bird boys, drivers, managers, bartenders, and everyone else behind the scenes, these are the people who make Wide Open Outfitters what it is. We would not be the business we are without them.

So this year, we took the entire staff out for a hunt of their own. Afterward, we got everyone together and handed out awards and bonuses to recognize some of the people who went above and beyond throughout the season.

It was a great day, a lot of laughs, and a good chance to let the people who are usually taking care of everyone else enjoy the experience for themselves.

We are incredibly lucky to have this group, and we appreciate everything they do for us and for every customer who walks through the doors of the lodge.

Wide Open Outfitters duck hunts are enjoyable because every day can offer a different kind of experience. 
Depending on the schedule and conditions, you may cross the Laguna Madre by airboat, hunt one of our freshwater ponds, or travel through the narrow routes of the northern marsh. 
Each habitat brings different scenery and a different style of hunting, while our scouts watch bird movement and help select the setup. 
Then there is everything surrounding the hunt: early rides with friends, time on the water, and good meals and drinks waiting back at La Finca. 
That combination of varied duck country, experienced staff, and a comfortable lodge is what makes these trips so easy to enjoy.

The northern marsh is a completely different kind of duck country. 
It is a mix of shallow pockets, marsh openings, vegetation, sloughs, and narrow channels. Differences in depth, cover, and available food give waterfowl places to feed, rest, and find shelter, so one opening can hunt very differently from the next. 
Getting there is part of what makes it special. We use airboats to travel through narrow marsh routes into country the operation describes as remote with little outside traffic. Because it is farther from La Finca than many Laguna locations, some marsh hunts become full day outings. 
The Wide Open Outfitters advantage is access and experience. Our crew knows how to move through this country and watch how changing conditions affect where birds want to be. It is a close-cover side of Tamaulipas duck hunting that feels completely different from the wide open Laguna Madre.

When you are not hunting, La Finca gives you plenty of ways to slow down and enjoy the trip.

Meals and the open bar are included with your Wide Open Outfitters stay. Depending on the menu, that can mean steaks, pasta, appetizers, desserts, or wild-game dishes before settling in with the group.

Between hunts, you can cool off in the pool, relax in the hot tub, play cards or a game of pool, or take a nap before heading out again. It is also a good time to replay the morning and hear how somebody's missed bird gets faster with every telling.

That is part of what makes Wide Open Outfitters different.

La Finca is more than a place to sleep. The staff handles the food, drinks, and details so the time away from the field feels like part of the trip.

The hours between hunts are a bigger part of a Wide Open Outfitters White Wing trip than most people expect. 
After the morning session, you return to La Finca for lunch and something cold to drink. The guns are put away, the gear comes off, and the group finally gets a chance to sit down and compare notes from the field. 
From there, the middle of the day is yours. Some guests head for the pool with a margarita. Others find a quiet room and take the kind of nap that only comes after an early morning and several hours of dove hunting. 
The laundry service is one of those details people appreciate once they experience it. Clothes left with the staff in the morning can be returned later cleaned, folded, and ready for the afternoon. You can shower, put on a clean shirt, and head back out without packing enough hunting clothes for a small army. 
As the afternoon hunt gets closer, the lodge starts moving again. Drinks are finished, gear is gathered, shell pouches are loaded, and everybody begins making their way back toward the vehicles.   Our staff handles the meals, drinks, laundry, and daily details while your group enjoys the lodge and gets ready to do it all again. 
The shooting may get most of the pictures, but afternoons like this are a big part of what makes La Finca such a good place to spend a few days.

Redheads are one of the defining ducks of the Laguna Madre, and the reason starts beneath the surface. 
The Mexican Laguna Madre is a remarkably shallow coastal lagoon with extensive beds of submerged seagrass. Recent monitoring in Tamaulipas confirms that shoalgrass remains the dominant seagrass in the areas studied. During winter, its rhizomes and seeds provide an important food source for redheads. 
The shallow water keeps that food within reach. Although redheads are diving ducks, they can also feed by tipping up or dipping their heads beneath the surface. That lets them work across grass flats without always needing deeper water. 
Redheads are also social during winter. They gather in flocks on Gulf Coast bays, and those groups can join together into the large rafts that make this bird so memorable on open water. A raft is never something we promise on every hunt, but seeing one spread across the Laguna puts the size of this habitat into perspective. 
At Wide Open Outfitters, our scouts monitor where ducks are concentrating and adjust our setups as bird movement changes. When the birds begin favoring a different area, the team can move with them and prepare a setup closer to the water they are actually using. 
That ability to hunt the Laguna Madre according to what the birds are doing is one reason our duck hunt stands out. You are pursuing one of the lagoon’s signature birds in the shallow grass habitat that helps explain why redheads gather here in the first place.

You just arrived from the best hunt of your life, you’re greeted with your drink of choice the second you open the door of the vehicle.

Fernando and Brian already remember what you were drinking the last time you came, even if that trip was the year before. Before you even step inside and fully settle down, you’ve got a cold drink in your hand and homemade appetizers waiting on you.

Not frozen appetizers and not something pulled from a box. Real food made by our kitchen staff with local Mexican ingredients and wild game that’s been brought back through the lodge from previous hunts. The kind of food that actually feels tied to where you are.

From there, you head to your room, get changed, and come back down for dinner. Every night has its own menu. Some nights that means quality steaks, pasta, and w**e. Another night might be a full game dinner where every item on the table came from the lodge in one way or another.

The open bar is yours, dessert is always part of the night, and once during the trip, an extremely talented mariachi group comes by to play and adds even more life to the evening.

After that, the night can go either way. Stay up late with your group and make use of the unlimited open bar, or head in early so you’re fresh when the morning hunt comes.

That part of the trip matters more than people think. The hunt gets people here. The full experience is what brings them back.

Redheads are the signature duck of the Laguna Madre down here, and there’s a reason people travel a long way to see it. This system is one of the most important wintering areas on the continent for redheads, and when they stack up, the numbers can be hard to believe.

Most of the time, we see them exactly where you would expect, out on the Laguna. The bay is shallow, clear, and loaded with submerged grass beds. That grass is one of the main food sources redheads key on all winter, which is why they can sit out there in big rafts day after day and never really leave.

But every once in a while, we will also get them showing up in big numbers in the fresh water ponds outside the Laguna. That usually surprises people until you understand how redheads live. They feed heavily in the salty bay, and then they will slide into fresh water to drink, rest, and rinse the salt. Those ponds become the comfort zone. Calm water, less wind, a place to loaf and get right before heading back to the grass beds.

So the pattern makes sense. Laguna Madre is the grocery store. Fresh water ponds are the reset button. When both are available and close together, you get a redhead situation that very few places can offer.

It was good to get the crew into the field together. The people behind every hunt are a big part of what makes the Wide Open Outfitters experience so special. They work hard, treat people right, and handle the little details that make a good hunt feel like a complete trip.

When the schedule takes us into the northern marsh, it often makes more sense to stay for the day than drive all the way back to the lodge between sessions. 
The marsh is farther from La Finca than many of our Laguna locations, so Wide Open Outfitters can turn the trip into a full-day excursion. After the morning hunt, the group can take a break under the shade, eat a camp-style lunch, and get ready for the afternoon session. 
On days arranged this way, cooks and bartenders may come along with tables, food, and cold drinks. It is the same La Finca hospitality, carried all the way into the marsh. 
That is one of the details that makes a Wide Open Outfitters hunt different. The ride, lunch, and time between sessions become part of the experience instead of time spent driving back and forth.
