My bright idea this evening. Let’s go for a walk to the pier and see the sunset. Okay, I’d love to.

All was good till I was standing by an unmanned pole and heard the line take off. Gave it a quick hold and couple spins of the reel handle to set the hook, while loudly asking “Who’s pole.”

Gentleman Sam claims the pole and shouts “Coming!”

Unbeknownst to me that line had become the attention of about 150 pound Loggerhead turtle. Fortunately the turtle rescue team had not yet left the pier and they quickly sprang into action.

She will be taken to the turtle conservatory tonight on Navarre Beach and then to the other conservatory for observation and hook removal from her flipper.

She is going to be fine and she is about the 7th one that was helped this year, 2026.

Extremely covered in algae so they will probably remove that and possibly a few barnacles but she did not have too many barnacles, so that is good.

Maybe they will name her Sam after the gentle fella who’s pole she was caught on. I know she is in good hands and will recover from her small hook wound.
