We are anchored over in Back Creek by Bert Jabins Yard. We will have an open boat for anyone who would like to come check out Resolution or talk about sailing on a passage with us. We will have some snacks and drinks on board and access is by dinghy, water taxi or if you need a ride send me a message here and I’ll meet you at the 4th street dinghy dock in Eastport and give you a lift.

These little rubber hot plates are great to put under plates, cutting boards or whatever you don’t want sliding. I used to use wet paper towels which works great also, but pretty wasteful. Anyway hope that’s helpful.

I do most things in my power to not beat to weather on offshore passages. We bear off to make things more comfortable or heave to among other things depending on the situation.

Anyway, when coastal cruising it can sometimes be inevitable unless you have nowhere to be and you can wait for the wind to change which is ideal. Doing what I do, waiting isn’t always an option.

Resolution makes sailing hard on the wind as good as it gets for what it is. Her fine entry, relatively narrow beam and deep draft help keep her speed up with zero pounding even through a steep Buzzards Bay chop (if you know you know). This video was last trip as we dealt with the never ending easterlies. We are between Block Island and Buzzards Bay making 6.5-7 knots into a 3-4 foot chop in 15-20 true wind speed at a 35-40 degree apparent angle. Not bad for a 43 year old full keeler.

Just a lovely broad reach on our most recent trip. Storm is finally easing up here and Resolution and myself are getting antsy to get moving to the boat show. Resolution is built for one thing and that’s crossing wide swaths of open ocean. Sitting on the mooring too long is a travesty.

I often get asked how I climb my mast solo. I am constantly seeing sketchy mast climbing setups by folks so I figured I’d share this setup. I’ve been working in the vertical world as a side gig from fishing and sailing for many years. I’ve been a rigger, arborist and climbing guide. This setup is my go to for ascending a single line. It translates well to the sailing world.

We have been working with Christine de Silva helping deploy her BRUVs in the deep. We just finished the second trip out to the continental shelf. I’ve spent so much time here in my commercial fishing career catching tuna, swordfish and sharks it’s neat to be back trying to catch sharks on camera instead. Might as well be an astronaut at these depths. The ocean never steps mesmerizing me.

It’s been an interesting season so far with a good combination of hike and sailing, sail training and now some research trips. It’s been a strange season in regards to weather. Either light air or heavy air. Not much in between, but the wildlife viewing has been one for the record books this year. From White Sharks, to every species of marine mammal you can think of, tons of pelagic birds (Wilson’s Storm Petrel in the galley the other night) you name it we have seen it.

We also just took Resolution out to the continental shelf, where I’ve spent most of my adult life to drop BRUVS (Baited Remote Underwater Videos Systems) in the deep. This is for a shark biologist to facilitate the study of deep water shark species. Almost using Resolution like I would be longlining. We set the gear and then have to find it again when it resurfaces. It’s absolutely fascinating. It looks like a good chunk of August we will be out there doing more of it and I’m stoked to be able to help. As a kid I think I knew every factoid about every known species of shark at the time. Even had a collection anatomical shark sketches I had drawn as a catalog for Shark ID so this is my inner kid coming out, haha.

Our 2026 calendar has a few more trips open in September and 2027 is up and open for booking on the site as well. Everything from long passages up north to hike and sailing trips a little bit closer to home. If you’re looking for a customized trip we do that too. We’ll take Resolution anywhere this enough water to float her.

Just a neat shot of Resolution in her element last trip. Cold water sailing, mountains and an incredibly peaceful anchorage surrounded by harbor porpoise, harbor and grey seals, eagles, osprey, black guillemots and thick banks of fog.
