One of my favorite details in Rothenburg odT is the ornate wrought iron signs hanging above the streets.

They were the medieval version of advertising. Since many people couldn’t read, inns, bakeries, and shops used symbolic signs that travelers could recognize from a distance.

This swan sign marks a historic Gasthof (inn). What looks like decoration today was once a practical way to do business.

Next time you’re in Rothenburg, look up. Some of the town’s best history is hanging just right above your head.
