We had a great group of ladies who signed up for the Pleated Log Cabin hand stitching class, also known as Manx Quilting. There was lots of fun conversation and laughter to go along with our hand stitching. At the end of the afternoon, there were some beautiful blocks stitched up. A huge thank you to all who attended and congratulations for learning a new technique and creating these beautiful blocks!

The Quilt Retreat will be offering a Hand Stitched Pleated Log Cabin Block class on August 17th from 2-6pm, so no sewing machine is needed for this class. Our instructor will be Mary Hunter and those of you that know her well, know that she has always hated hand stitching, but she said she has found this design to actually be easy and fun to do and there was just something quite satisfying about seeing the block come together while stitching it by hand.

Sewing is done with a simple running stitch and it's okay if your stitches aren't even or totally straight as all of that gets hidden is the pleats of the log! You will definitely be able to finish a whole block during the class and most likely get a second one started or finished -- it's that easy! It's a fun project to have to carry along with you when you're traveling, sitting and waiting somewhere, or watching TV.

The cost of the class will be $15 and you can purchase a kit that contains all of the fabric you need to make 4 blocks for $10 or you can bring your own fabric. A fabric list will be emailed to you once you sign up and these blocks are a great way to use up your scraps.

Everyone should bring the following with them to class
Needle for hand sewing
Thimble if you use one
White or grey thread or thread to match your 8" x 8" square
Pins for temporarily holding pieces in place
Scissors for snipping threads and fabric strips to length
A small quilters ruler
Pencil or your preferred tool for drawing a line on the back of your fabric
A gallon size Ziploc bag to hold your project and materials
And, best of all, no sewing machine!

The past 5 weeks have been busy and exciting for us as we have had a booking every single week! We thank all the quilters who came and made their very own quilting retreat with their friends and we thank all the families who needed a place to stay while visiting relatives here in the county.

Are you and your friends looking for a great getaway spot to spend some time quilting or crafting? If yes, then The Quilt Retreat is the spot for you. We sleep up to 6 people and have plenty of room for you to work on your quilting or crafting projects. It's a quiet location in the country just 45 minutes from Salem or 45 minutes from Blacksburg. Prepare your own meals in our kitchen which is fully stocked with pots and pans, dishes, silverware, dishwasher, stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot and bagel/toast toaster. We have 3 bedrooms (1 with a queen bed and 2 with 2 twin XL beds in each) and 2 bathrooms. Email [email protected] for more information.

Registration is now open for a Pinwheels and Paddlewheels Quilt Class at The Quilt Retreat.
Location: The Quilt Retreat
14232 Cumberland Gap Rd
New Castle, VA
Time: 9am - 2pm but if you would like to stay longer and continue to sew, we will be open until 5pm
Instructor: Mary Hunter
Date: Space is limited so in order to accommodate as many as we can, we will offer the class on February 22, 2025 and again on March 8, 2025.

In this class Mary will teach you how to construct the block and then sew it together in order to make pinwheels and paddlewheels. Once you sign up, Mary will send you yardage and cutting information for all sizes from Baby to King and you can choose which size you want to make. Unless you choose to go with a scrappy look, you will only need two colors of fabrics. The pattern is beginner friendly.

The class registration fee is $25 per person. You may register on-line by using the link below, or you may email Mary at [email protected] and let her know which date you would like to sign up for. Payment for the class will be due to Mary by February 18th.
