Puglia is often chosen for its coast, but its summer character is best understood through the traditions that shape everyday life.

Start with olive oil: a visit and tasting explains why it is often called “Apulian Gold.” Add a fresh pasta class to see how simple ingredients become orecchiette by hand. Then move to the dairy tradition behind mozzarella and burrata, made fresh rather than treated as a restaurant garnish.

The fourth element is pizzica, a traditional dance rooted in the region’s folk culture. It brings music and movement into a Puglia itinerary in a way that a beach day alone cannot.

A private driver is more useful when you want to include hill towns, a lemon grove, a vineyard, or a slower lunch away from the busiest waterfronts.

The strongest summer itineraries rarely try to do both in one day. They choose one main way of moving, then build the experiences around it.

That might mean a morning on the water followed by a late lunch, or a scenic drive with a lemon experience and a vineyard visit. The details depend on where you stay, how many travelers are together, and how much time you want to spend in transit.

Near Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, several lanes still preserve the memory of the crafts once practiced there: Via dei Balestrari recalls crossbow makers, Via dei Baullari trunk makers, Via dei Chiavari lock and key makers, and Via dei Coronari the sellers of rosary beads.

This is more than a curiosity. It gives a private walk a clear thread. Begin early at Campo de’ Fiori, where the market has been held since 1869, then follow the smaller streets while the city is still cool. Instead of trying to cover every landmark, spend time noticing the signs, shopfronts, courtyards and details that tell you what Rome was made of.
