Photo by The high mountain landscapes of our planet have become somewhat of an obsession for me over the past five years. There is a stark, elemental beauty to these realms, an almost alien world. When approached in the correct spirit, they can allow access to a state of mind where one becomes acutely aware of the largeness of space and time, and of our precious, fleeting place here.
Below is short passage from an essay I wrote about this photograph shortly after returning from a three month expedition into the wilds of the Himalaya:
“As a photographer, I live for moments like these: the very essence of what brought me here; that elemental beauty that pleases the human soul. The mountain assumes the metaphorical, a distilled re-enactment of life played out in the rocky amphitheatre before me; that of light and dark, life and death, the perilous position of humanity on the edge, the powerlessness of our species set against the awe-inspiring grandeur of nature. Yet, at the same time, it represents the great potential of humanity when we chose to explore and push our boundaries. And then it’s gone, that fleeting moment, frozen in my camera, never to be repeated in quite that same way ever again. That’s why I’m here; that’s what drives me on; that’s why I know, by the time I reach the haven of base camp in two days, I’ll already be asking myself, where next?”
