Just a repeat of what I’ve been saying for years.

Final sentence of the article sums it up: ”Despite big numbers at big sales, big bargains continue to slide under the radar.”

Scottsdale auction week generated over $275 million in sales and counting (as this was being written, MAG Auctions had yet to announce its results). Whether you like it or not, it's a headline...

Here's a few stats from Jan. 2022 Arizona Auction Week:

*Total sales $266.7 million. Up 22% from 2020 despite one-third fewer cars. (For comparison, Mecum's Kissimmee auction totaled $239 million). Hagerty's forecast was $211 million.

*Top sale- RM Sotheby's sold a 1955 Mercedes Benz $6,825,000.

*Bonham's sold the 1949 Buick from the movie 'Rainman' for $335,000.

*Of course, my highlight was the George Bailey 1919 Dodge from the movie 'It's a Wonderful Life' selling at Mecum for $475,000, almost double the reserve of $250,000.

*Despite fewer auctions and fewer cars, the sell-through rate increased from 97% to 99%.

*Average sale price increased from $95,152 to $126,556.

A little more on Mecum Kissimmee:

*Mecum sold over 1,000 more cars this year than last.

*Average sale price increased from $46K to $72K.

*Here's a big one- Vehicles sold that were bought at the auction within the past two years had an AVERAGE return- as in profit- of 26%, up from 7% in previous years.

Most remarkable- at each of these sales, I found MULTIPLE cars that sold well under market value. Every. Sale. This is the magic of the auction world.

Next on my agenda- the Mecum auction in Glendale AZ at the end of March. I will be there credentialed to buy or sell. If you want something of your own, or just want to get in on the current bonanza, message me and I'll show you how.

Watching the Barrett Jackson car auction in Scottsdale today, I’ve seen a lot of bargains. I won’t bore anybody with details, but I will say that I still cannot recommend their method of all cars selling no reserve. The point of the reserve is a safety net in case your car bids for way less than you were willing to release it for. I know that a lot of people got stung today by that policy. And, there’s no savings by doing so, their sellers fee is still 10%! By comparison, mecum charges 10% if you had a reserve and sell, or you can choose to sell it no reserve for 5%.

Barrett Jackson has a good thing, they have almost as many cars this week as Mecum had last week. Yet, as a representative for sellers, I can’t think of a situation where I would ever recommend not having a choice of setting a reserve.

These seven sales could be anomalies ... or they could signal the collector car market roaring back in a big way for 2022.

Distracting day yesterday🎉😁 but I still found one money maker. This was a beautiful car that was ready for parade duty, and at least $10-$20K under the money. What could be more fun than enjoying an auction in Florida in January and making several thousand dollars while you’re doing it? Wish I could have bought it ❤️

For today’s version of “Bob’s Bargains”, we have… No entries. but, that is part of the auction process also, nothing is guaranteed. In all fairness, I didn’t spend all my time today in the lane either.

The 1963 StarFire I was in love with sold for $20,000. Definitely a reasonable price. Generally speaking, that type of car- early 60s American brands- are a good bargain, and this one was no exception. If you’re wondering what to get, these cars are comfortable, reliable, very capable in today’s traffic, and you can still get parts for them pretty easily. And they are incredible artwork. Recommended.

Back again tomorrow with some more information for you all!
