Our Italian Table

Our Italian Table Food, wine and wanderings from our beloved Italy. They are the children of two wonderful first-generation Italian-Americans.

Our Italian Table is a collaboration between Michele and Joe Becci, sister and brother, who grew up in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Michele and Joey's love of cooking started with helping their mother prepare Sunday's meal after church by rolling meatballs or making ravioli and gnocchi. As they have pursued successful careers in the technology sector, their love for cooking has only deepened, leading

Michele to invite Joey to co-found their "Our Italian Table" blog in 2008. Sharing their "food, wine and wanderings" from their beloved Italy, where they both spend time as often as possible, has become a passion and a joy appreciated by family, friends, and many other readers.

Back home in PA now … but with a special recipe in hand! I met with .privatechef while in Montalcino last week and he shared his grandmother’s delicious Peposo recipe with me 💃🏻
Perfect for these long winter nights..

December in Montalcino always reminds me that rest is part of the rhythm. That quiet has its own kind of music. And that it is ok to slow down and listen 🌟

A new essay on the quiet season, slow cooking and this comforting recipe are on our Substack now … link in bio 🧡

December in Montalcino is one of my favorite times to be here. The vines are bare. Sunsets are wrapped in gold. And the whole valley seems to exhale.

This quiet season steals my heart. 🧡

One of our favorite memories from Naples was how alive it is with street food; tiny storefronts tucked into narrow streets, mostly offering something fried and irresistible.

Joey’s favorite was the frittatina di pasta. 🇮🇹

It was a creamy tangle of pasta bound with cheese, molded, chilled, then fried until crisp outside and molten inside. Just delicious!

He recreated the recipe back in LA for a recent dinner party and it is up on  OurItalianTable.com 🍋🇮🇹

On our Substack today! One of my favorite foods from our trip to Naples 🇮🇹 We went in search of pizza, ragù, and sfogliatelle (all delivered in spades 🙌)… but what stole my heart was something completely unexpected: glossy chocolate taralli dipped in a sugar glaze.

Discovered at , they were heaven on a tray — slightly sweet, nutty, and utterly irresistible. I loved them so much I tried recreating them at home (recipe linked in bio 💙).

Sometimes the sweetest memories aren’t the grand sights but the little surprises — like a humble chocolate tarallo on a hot Neapolitan morning.

Let the Neapolitan recipes begin! 💙 up first…pasta alla genovese 💙💙💙

This has quickly become a favorite …lots of onions and meat cooked low and slow for hours until the onions simply melt into a delicious sauce that coats the pasta. 🌟

In some restaurants where we tried this in Napoli, the onions were the star of the sauce while at others, the meat took center stage. In this version from Joey, the two are in perfect balance … a silky heavenly combination that coats every morsel. 💙💙💙

You can find the recipe on the blog or follow the link in our bio! https://ouritaliantable.substack.com/p/pasta-genovese

They say that when you come to Napoli, you cry twice: once when you arrive, and once when you leave. 💙

I get it. This wild, crazy city seeps into your soul….it is loud and gritty and chaotic.. and oh so very vibrantly alive…💙

Grazie di cuore, Napoli, for sharing your magic and your spirit with us. Arrivederci for now …keep singing-until we meet again

We took a ferry to the little island of Procida yesterday, where the sun-faded facades of the homes are a calming cascade of sherbert colors tumbling down to the water’s edge. 🩵🩷💛🧡 Despite the hot, humid weather, we walked to the other side of the island and settled in for a quiet seaside lunch in the little harbor of Corricella - also where one of my all-time favorite movies was filmed - Il Postino.

Lunch was at Ristorante da Maria, home to the island’s first female fisherman. The meal was delicious - little crispy calamaretti as an antipasti, followed by the freshest of grilled fish for me and for Giuseppe, a homemade pasta dressed with fresh anchovies, lemons, and pecorino. At the end of our meal, our delightful waiter brought us refreshing glasses of limoncello and meloncello and Maria herself , who was sitting relaxing in the shade near the restaurant, sent us off with a gift: a gorgeous Procida lemon.

And the easiest way back to the main harbor? By boat - with Maria's husband at the helm 💛 🩵

When we randomly picked the place to stay in Napoli, we had no idea it would be a few blocks from the street where our grandmother was born and mere steps from the church where she was baptized. 🌟

The church, Sant’Anna di Palazzo, was open this evening so we stopped in and spoke with the priest. We had the book number of her baptism record from a letter we received years ago while researching our Italian citizenship. The priest immediately sent someone to fetch her baptism record. 💙 It’s number 13 on the page….her full name was Maria Sofia Amalia Francesca Egotalmo born 26 ottobre 1895; baptized 28 ottobre 1895 🙏
