If you see a few "X's" marked in places during your tour with us, this is why...
Marie Laveau, the legendary Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, was a powerful spiritual leader, healer, and community figure in the 19th century. Her influence blended African, Caribbean, and Catholic traditions, making her a revered and mysterious figure in the city’s history. Though she passed in 1881, her tomb in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 remains one of the most visited, with visitors leaving offerings and marking "X's" in hopes of granted wishes...
Unfortunately, drawing on the tombs destroys the unique finish and defaces the family's final resting place.
Instead, an excellent way to revere those laid to rest in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is to join us on a personal visit with one of our guided tours.
Let's help make sure Marie Laveau's legacy continues on to shape New Orleans' spiritual and cultural identity in the most respectful manner possible!
