Louisiana backroads and Real Louisiana road trips show you a side of this state you will never see from the interstate. Sure, I-10 and I-49 will get you there faster. But if you want to see the real Louisiana, you have to get off the highway and take the long way. 🛣️

The backroads wind under live oaks so old and wide they form a tunnel over the road, Spanish moss swaying just above your truck. They pass sugarcane fields, rice fields, and cattle pastures. They run through little towns with one blinking light, a white wooden church, and a country store that has been selling cold drinks and boudin since before your parents were born. You pass raised cottages with porches full of rocking chairs, old cemeteries tucked behind churches, and roadside stands selling satsumas, pecans, or fig preserves depending on the season. Somebody on a porch waves at you, and you wave back.

The backroads take longer. There is no getting around that. But they are where Louisiana still lives, in the towns the interstate skipped, the family restaurants that never needed a billboard, and the people who have been on the same land for generations. Next time you have a little extra time, skip the highway. Roll the windows down, slow down, and let the backroads show you what you have been missing. 🌳
