We love reading about New Orleans experiences. LeaLea VanWinkle-Gisler shared her experience of music on the streets of the French Quarter:
People ask “what’s so special about New Orleans?” This morning I had an awesome, quintessential “New Orleans Experience.” I was leading a walking tour of the French Quarter with emphasis on music and history.
Several times during the first part of the tour, I cautioned our guests to “not judge anything or anyone in New Orleans by their outside.” Open one of those shuttered doors and find yourself in a multi-million dollar home.
We arrive at the corner of St. Peter and Royal, and who should be there? Only a world class clarinetist who is beloved. As I’m waiting for the group to catch up and be ready for our next story, I walk over to this lovely lady drinking her coffee, watching folks go by, waving to some, smiling at all.
I walk up to her and tell how much it fills in my heart to see her back on Royal Street.
When all of my guests come together, I say to them:
“Now, all morning I’ve been telling you all to not judge anything in New Orleans by its outside. This lovely lady sitting here appears to be simply a joyful soul enjoying her coffee while watching folks go by on Royal. Let me put her on the spot: This is a world class clarinetist, .
Now, Miss Doreen, you correct me if I'm wrong, but it’s my understanding of all the famous music halls you’ve played the world over, your favorite spot is right here, busking on Royal.” Miss Doreen laughs and gives us that dazzling smile which comes from her beautiful soul. She shakes her head and says, “yes indeed!”
She then proceeds to retrieve her clarinet and play a little something for us. No band, just Miss Doreen giving joy. The group was stunned. Some said hearing Miss Doreen play gave them goose bumps! This is New Orleans, people who share their gifts freely and with genuine affection. Giving folks some lagniappe on a Sunday morning. Hearing those notes “sing”, is why I love New Orleans.
