Empire State: check tonight's colors

Before we look up tonight, we look it up. The Empire State Building's tower lights change for holidays and cultural events using more than 1,000 LED zones, and its website shows tonight's colors and a calendar of upcoming ones. You can also text CONNECT to 274-16 for alerts about special lightings.

What colors have you seen on it?

NYC Ferry: don't pay twice

Switching routes on NYC Ferry costs nothing extra. All transfers within the NYC Ferry system are free for 120 minutes once you start a one-way trip (round trips don't qualify). The East River route always stops at Wall St./Pier 11, DUMBO and East 34th St., so we can hop between Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Midtown with the skyline beside us the whole way.

Where would you hop off first?

Grant's Tomb is free

No ticket, no entrance pass: the National Park Service lists the General Grant National Memorial on Riverside Drive as free. It is the largest mausoleum in North America, the final resting place of President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia, and its dome stretches 150 feet into the sky. Below the overlook pavilion, the visitor center has restrooms, exhibits and a 22-minute film about Grant.
