In 1964, Maria Lassnig's mother died of liver cancer. The painting Fear of Cancer is just one of several works that show the artist processing her fear of also falling prey to the disease. Both figures represent the artist. Painted in shades of green, blue, and red, the frail bodies seem almost to fade into the background. This contrasts with the crustacean, which represents the disease. In compositional terms, its sharp contours give it an intrusive, hard-edged presence. The monitor between the legs of the figure on the left is a reminder of the radiologist's power to see inside the body and make the dreaded discovery of the disease.

In response to a special "Führer's order" from Hi**er, the military structure was erected from March 1942 to summer 1943, in the middle of the Second World War. Forced laborers (kidnapped)and Soviet prisoners of war were part of the workforce. The building had more than one function: As a flak tower, it was equipped with anti-aircraft ("flak") guns and was meant to protect Hamburg from Allied air raids. The lower levels served no military purpose. Here, air raid shelters for the civilian populace (actually the richest of who was still “free”) were created.

Today is houses apartments, cafes, galleries and pop up stores. It’s a big climb!

At these festivals, several colles castelleres (teams that build towers) attempt to build and then dismantle a tower's structure. On 16 November 2010, castells were declared by UNESCO to be amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
