A bit on the hipster and "cheto" (upper class) side for my tastes, but the NYTimes "36 Hours in Buenos Aires" by Nell McShane Wulfhart was definitely more informed than previous ones! A few personal comments:
1. The "good English translations" mentioned in the Espacio Memoria museum are actually partially mine!
2. If you go to the Chacarita Cemetery, along with visiting Carlos Gardel, definitely look for the mausoleum of Jorge Newbery which is stunning. Also, on the far end of the cemetery in German section (Cemeterio Aleman) you can find the grave of Hans Langsdorff, the Admiral of the German battleship Graf Spee who committed su***de in the naval hospital here!
3. Bar Cao - the only mention on the southside of the city - is definitely overrated. And even though we had our wedding party there back in 2002 (before it changed owners) I would not recommend it.
4. And the Preferido de Palermo is another overrated rip-off. Very much a "for export" place as people say here.
In this city of constant change, new discoveries and beloved stalwarts are on the itinerary for foodies, wine lovers, shoppers and culture seekers.
