Learn. Serve. Engage. They will become contributing members of society and will weigh in on issues that impact their community.
(1)

The Alternative Breaks Program provides students with the opportunity to learn about political and social community dynamics while becoming a catalyst for collaborative social change. Through learning and practice, students will explore the theory of integrating service, education, and reflection to create meaningful change in their communities. Last year over 280 NYU students traveled across the

world to spend their winter break, spring break and weekends working with various host communities on such issues as literacy, poverty, homelessness, racism, immigration, disaster relief, and the environment. Our vision is a society of effective citizens: people who value the community as a priority when making life decisions. As part of the Alternative Break experience, participants will become more educated and experienced in all sides of a social issue. Upon return, they will be empowered to make more informed decisions and take meaningful action that supports a greater good. To apply, please visit our website at http://www.nyu.edu/life/student-life/nyu-service/local-national-service/alternative-breaks.html

Frank and Jarrett are the site leaders for the Liberal Studies trip heading to Michigan focusing on Community Development! Keep reading to learn more ✨
To be frank, my name is Frank. My name is Yijie Huang but you can call me Frank. I am a sophomore in LS Core and I am thinking about double majoring in International Relations (CAS) and Media, Culture, and Communications (Steinhardt). I grew up in a small county in China called Pujiang (well...it has a population of 500,000, but in China that’s still considered a small county). At the age of 15, I came to the United States and attended a high school in Maryland. Now I am here in the Big Apple - the City of Dreams. Last year, I went on the Liberal Studies Alternative Breaks to Guatemala. THIS YEAR, I am leading the LSAB to Michigan trip
My name is Jarrett Lash and I’m from Manassas, Virginia. I am a current sophomore in Global Liberal Studies focusing in Politics, Rights, and Development and minoring in Chinese. I am beyond excited to co-lead the Liberal Studies Alternative Break (LSAB) to Detroit and Flint, MI, with Frank. Last year, while studying at NYU Paris, I went on an alternative breaks trip to Athens, Greece to volunteer in refugee squats and aiding non-profits. The experience was incredibly impactful, so when the opportunity arose to assist with leading the trip to a city in my home country I was thrilled

Meet Garin and Suyash! They are the site leaders for the Comm*Unity trip heading to Atlanta, Georgia 💜
My name is Garin and I am a junior in CAS double majoring in Public Policy and History. My hometown is in Queens, New York and I will be co-leading Comm*Unity 11.0! I became involved in AB by joining Comm*Unity my freshman year. As a site leader, I hope to foster this passion within my participants by educating and helping to build strong relationships between my them. I encourage participants to not only volunteer their time to work on these issues, but also learn and educate others as well
And look who’s back! Your favorite AB coordinator: Suyash 🤩. Suyash was part of Comm*Unity 8.0 during his first year and is super excited to be the other site leader for this trip. Check out the earlier post to learn more about Suyash ☀️ @ New York University

Our next AB site leader spotlight is Nura and Shana!! Keep reading to learn more about these amazing people:

Hi! My name is Shana Pareemamun. I am a senior in CAS, studying Politics and Economics and I have been doing AB since my Freshman year. I am an international student from Mauritius and participating in AB has allowed me to learn about the different social issues impacting the US. AB is also a great way to find community at NYU and volunteer in a wholesome environment.

Greetings everyone! My name is Nura Anwar and I am a second-year graduate student at CGPH studying Global Health along with Health and Human Rights. I hail from the wonderfully diverse Astoria, Queens, New York. Previously as an undergraduate student at NYU, I was unable to join NYU AB and made a promise to myself that if I had another opportunity in the future I would join. Last year I participated in two trips: Disaster Relief in Houston, Texas and the Public Health Development in rural West Virginia. My favorite part about AB is bonding with peers who are willing to transform a little bit of the world one step at a time, while becoming comfortable being uncomfortable with one another.

Their trip is heading to the Dominican Republic to work with a local non-profit, Outreach 360, on education and youth development. Want to learn more about the other site leaders and trips? Head to our Site Leader Highlights 🤩 @ New York University

Excited to learn more about our amazing site leaders? Read on!
Hello! I am Tiana, a Gallatin junior concentrating in Visual Arts and Learning within the Digital Medium. I joined the AB Gesundheit trip freshman year to learn how to become an active volunteer and become more aware about the problems our world communities are facing. For me, AB has been a meaningful experience as it has given me peer mentors, taught me more about my self identity, and given me a place to have important discussions about social issues and college struggles. Through AB I have met site leaders who inspire me to take initiative and show others how they can take initiative.
Hi there! My name is Vyanne. I am a junior studying Media, Culture, and Communication with a minor in Business of Media, Entertainment, and Technology. I was born in Saigon, Vietnam and grew up in South Windsor, Connecticut. I became involved in Alternative Breaks after participating in Project Outreach as a freshman. I have participated in two AB trips focusing on domestic peace and refugee rights. My favorite part about AB is our commitment to social justice and the relationships we form within our community. Our trip focuses on learning about public health 🤩
