As I prepare for this year’s Travel Leaders Conference, I realized my last post was when I was preparing for our 2021 conference. As I read it back now, I have to smile, I was so hopeful and excited, it really seemed like the end of the pandemic was upon us and travel was BACK in a big way!. Then it was HELLLOOOO Omicron and goodbye happiness. Well, that is a bit dramatic, but it certainly took the wind out of my sales. Travel continued to be complicated, unstable, and between testing, vaccines, cancelled flights and staffing shortages, the challenges seemed overwhelming. Why travel? Why help others travel when it was just a big mess? While I was still taking trips, and of course working with my clients, something just seemed different. I realized somewhere along the way, I had lost my WHY, and almost threw in the towel.
Then last week I sailed the Adventure of the Seas from NYto Bermuda and my WHY washed over me in a sudden flood of tears, and as we pulled away, I knew in my heart my WHY was back. You see, I no longer have my Mother to travel with, but I have the many years of memories of our vacations, and those memories bring me so much joy. There are few things in life that are truly priceless, but memories made with those you love, especially when those people are no longer with us, those memories are priceless. The joy in my life is that I get to work with wonderful people and be a part of helping them build a lifetime of memories with their loved ones. Honeymoons, family trips, milestone birthdays, the list of reasons to travel is endless, and of course, mother-daughter trips will always be near and dear to my heart. It is an honor that I am trusted to share these magical moments, because the planning is a big part of the adventure, as are the photos, and the souvenirs. But the memories, those are the treasure. Those are the nuggets of gold that you can pull out when needed, if you need a laugh, or a cry, or a little of both.
I want to thank my friends who sailed with me on this last cruise, and helped me find my way, and my WHY again. And also how NOT to sink a boat, but that’s a story for a different time!
