Streetwise New York Tours

Streetwise New York Tours Unique customized walking tours of New York in English and Spanish. Most walking tours point and stare at New York—with Streetwise New York, you live it.

We explore neighborhoods, recount history and study contrasts—uncovering the true New York, that’s melted into pizza slices, hidden in subways, and carried in the ever-changing stories of its 8 million people. From the swankiest stretches of Fifth Avenue to the grimiest of graffitied alleys, we share tales passed down from our grandparents, gleaned from books, and whispered on street corners. En S

treetwise New York ofrecemos tours privados para grupos pequeños.

‼️These are the last two weeks to visit the Met roof top for the next five years‼️

On Oct. 19th, the museum’s roof with art and a bar and views of Central Park and the skyline will close for a multiyear renovation. It will be surely missed!

70 Pine Street (1932), known as the last downtown skyscraper of the Jazz Age. Swipe to see the elevators. I love the art deco style with a native american motif, and references to the building’s crown. Originally the elevator was double-decker, the world’s first.

In New York, we’re used to hearing how a place used to be gritty, abandoned and graffiti filled. This flips the narrative. Top 📸: Thomas F. Arndt (1980) from collection. Bottom 📸: me 2021 (Delancey and Essex).

📸 Abajo: yo, 2021 (Delancey and Essex).

Radio City Music Hall (español👇)

Do you know the 1963 Drifters hit song that starts, “They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway?” Well since then, Broadway has switched over to LED. But Radio City in all its Art Deco glory has stayed neon since the 1930’s. In theater lingo, the theater has been “dark” (closed) since March, but the sign shines bright.

Paul Manship the sculptor of the golden Prometheus statue said upon its completion that he regretted making a horizontal, not vertical, statue for the plaza of Rockefeller Center. I’m guessing he didn’t consider how it would look under a 75 foot (23m) tree.

New article by Andrew up in Tablet Magazine.

In 1968, famed graphic designer Milton Glaser ("I ♥ NY " creator) wrote “A Gentile’s Guide to Jewish Food.” In it, he introduces the non-Jew to myriad smoked, pickled, and salted fish. 52 years later, I found that a third of the fish he recommends is nowhere to be found.

So I seek out one fish, Kapchunka, and along the way tour New York’s appetizing scene. It’s a look into the varied world of Ashkenazi Jews in New York and an examination of the pressures that shape Jewish food.

Thanks to Russ & Daughters Shelsky's of Brooklyn: Appetizing & Delicatessen Acme Smoked Fish Murray's Sturgeon Shop, all dedicated and top places, who were generous and patient in explaining the appetizing world to me.

Kapchunka was once a staple of Jewish appetizing stores. Today it has nearly vanished. So I set off on a journey across New York to taste what I’d been missing.
