DEARLY BELOVED?
“Adobe not so much forgot who its users were, but instead it actively decided they no longer mattered. It believed it had become so big, so mighty, and so important that it could move beyond them. What arrogance.”

Shifting priorities and a move to appeal to B2B has left Adobe alone. Now as enemies gather at its gates, it has run out of allies.

PHOTO STORY: With grace and dignity. David Turnley

Former Director of the FBI Robert Mueller passed away today at age 81. I had the privilege to make this photograph of Director Mueller in 2006, at his early morning meeting briefing at the FBI Headquarters in Washington in 2006, on assignment for Paris Match Magazine.
I was given only a few minutes by his press attaché and as the clock ticked down and still didn’t have a great photograph, the attaché signaled that it was time to go and as I kneeled behind Director Mueller I asked him to please stand and to turn around for a photograph and he obliged allowing me to make this photograph.

Remembering Kenny Rogers, who died on this day, March the 20th, 2020, aged 81.

Rogers was not only a country music legend, but also a passionate, talented, skilled, photographer.

Rogers had a lifelong love of photography and studied under renowned American photographer John Sexton.

You can read more about Kenny's photography and see samples of his work via the link that I'll add in the comments section. .......

MEMORIES: A share from friend and colleague Deanne. She captured Robert DuVall a while back and has an interesting story about the commission. Check it out on her page. 🕊️

I was sorry to learn that Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall has died at age 95. He was known for roles in movies including “Apocolypse Now” and “The Godfather”.

When he came to San Francisco in 1998 to promote his new film “The Apostle” I met him at his hotel to photograph him for the San Francisco Chronicle. I looked around the hotel and didn’t see an interesting location. I had scouted a old church next door since he plays a preacher in search of redemption in the film. I was hoping he’d agree to go over there for the photo.

It’s a challenge to make a storytelling portrait in a hotel that has nothing to do with the work actors are promoting but it seemed the pews in the old church might work. He graciously agreed and I’m grateful that he collaborated with me to make a portrait that had more mood than we’d be able to evoke in a shiny hotel.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to an icon. There is so much to learn from Vivian Maier life and work. I certainly can identify with her personality in many ways. Her camera was her voice overall. She spoke clearly even though she kept that voice hidden for so many years.

Today would be Vivian Maier‘s 100th birthday!

EXPOSE: Worth a look. The story is written as soon as the shutter paints in light and shadow. Find your purpose. It’s out there.

The Chelsea was converted from an apartment building into a hotel in the early 20th century, and has housed both long-term residents and temporary guests. Tony Notarberardino, a photographer from Melbourne who first arrived at the Chelsea Hotel in 1994, thought that he would be one of the latter. Instead, “I never left,” he said. When Notarberardino began living in the hotel, he was struck by the hodgepodge atmosphere, where a surprise seemingly lurked around every corner. One night, in the fall of 1997, he approached an aging drag queen he saw in the hotel elevator; she agreed to sit for a portrait in his room. With this, he embarked on a series that he would spend the next two decades pursuing. “I just saw all of these amazing people,” he said. “And I couldn’t not photograph them.” Notarberardino captured a cross-section of the hotel’s guests, as well as its employees. His project documents participants in a specific era of New York City that was on the verge of ending. See the full collection: https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/0JWlso
