In the iconic skyline 🏙️, the Chrysler Building was the world’s tallest from 1930 to 1931 at 1,046 feet (319 m). A few streets south, the Empire State Building claimed the title in 1931 at 1,454 feet (443 m). Along the East River, the United Nations Secretariat Building was completed in 1952. At 550 feet (167 m) and 39 stories, it was never meant to join the height race. It was the first building with a full curtain wall of uninterrupted green-blue glass on the east and west faces, balanced by windowless marble on the north and south. A clear example of the International Style, the Secretariat favors simple geometry, efficient interiors, and minimal ornament to express a forward looking spirit.

Plastic is cheap, flexible, and easy to shape. Those qualities made it wildly popular after World War II and it is now everywhere, from toothbrushes 🪥 and shopping bags 🛍️ to bottles 🧴, appliances 🖥️, and even astronaut suits 🧑‍🚀. The problem is that the same chemical properties that make plastic so useful also make it hard to get rid of. According to , the world produces about 430 million metric tons of new plastic every year. Once used, 79 percent of it ends up in landfills or the environment, around 12 percent is incinerated, and less than 10 percent is recycled.

Plastic pollution is one of the greatest environmental challenges we face. Small daily changes add up. Reduce what you buy, refuse single use where you can, reuse items, and recycle ♻️ properly.

Want to learn more and see practical solutions in person? Join a guided tour at the United Nations. Meet our tour guides and expert speakers and discover global efforts to tackle plastic pollution.

They’re back! For six weeks this summer, 72 multilingual and immigrant students 🧑🏼‍🎓👩🏽‍🎓 from all five boroughs joined the NYC Public Schools Global Leaders Academy 🏫. They met four days a week at 8:45 AM and began each morning with “Good Morning World” 🌍. Students researched a country they love, played its anthem, showed its flag, and shared its music 🎶 and food 🍲. Many students even gave bilingual presentations, proudly speaking in both English and their home languages. Those moments built confidence and gave everyone a chance to practice public speaking.

The program mixed classroom learning with real world experience. Students visited UN Headquarters and the Permanent Missions of 🇬🇭, 🇩🇪, 🇵🇹, 🇮🇩 and the 🇬🇧. They tackled projects from water pollution to mental health and explored tech gaps in the in a final presentation called “Merging Mankind, Connecting the Disconnected.” Aasha, Dahlia, Fatima, Hagnide, Namratha and Rosalys mapped needs, budgets and partnerships to close those gaps.

At the festive finale Zuhaa sang “Somewhere Only We Know,” Selma made paper bouquets 💐 for teachers 👨🏻‍🏫, and Fabrizio spoke about how photography 📸 helped him make friends. Namratha said it best, “If we accomplished so much in six weeks, imagine how much we can accomplish in a lifetime together.” The program is now in its third summer and graduates join a global network of 268 Global Leaders.

Congratulations to these brilliant students and to their teachers and educators 👏. United Nations Visitors Centre was honored to host you at the and our expert speakers loved your questions about the , and human rights.

On we honor all humanitarians killed, injured, kidnapped or detained in the line of duty. In 2024 alone more than 380 aid workers lost their lives, some in their homes, others while saving lives. Today and always we remember them.

On 19 August 2003 a bomb attack on the UN compound in Baghdad killed 22 humanitarian workers. A recovered UN flag from that day now hangs in the General Assembly Lobby at , a reminder of the risks humanitarians face and the need to protect them.

A disarmament expert briefed them and noted, “Worldwide, one person dies from small arms every two minutes,” and added that armament races are not a solution while the UN works with Member States to build confidence.

Tour guide Jude ( 🇺🇸) led the tour and quizzed the students about the cost of landmines. They guessed numbers like $1,000 and $500 but were surprised to learn a landmine can cost as little as $3 while removal can cost up to $100, not counting the human toll.

Twelve-year-old Sam listened closely and said, “When I grow up, I’ll work here. I am interested in political science.” The United States is his third country of residence after 🇸🇾 and 🇸🇦.
