We LOVE when people interrupt our tours!! We know - most tour guides aren’t thrilled by outside interruptions. They have a script, a schedule, and a route to stick to. But on our tours, when people stop us and wish to share something, it’s always meaningful.

Our founder, Michael, recently took a trip across the pond and made sure to check out London’s LGBTQ+ bookshop, Gay’s the Word! 🤓🌈📚

SO many folks on tour have recommended this place of stories and community, and it did not disappoint! We also learned a fun historical connection to our tour! 👀

In 1967, Craig Rodwell opened the first gay and le***an bookshop on the east coast in the United States, the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop, which we visit on our tour! A few years later, Craig befriends Ernest Hole, who eventually opens Gay’s the Word in London in 1979. Ernest says about Craig: “His example inspired me to try and create a similar bookshop in London.” And so he did! So fun to discover this connection in LGBTQ+ history. 📕

LGBTQ+ bookshops are becoming increasingly rare, and increasingly important. They continue to be such valuable spaces for visibility, representation, education, and community. What’s your faorite LGBTQ+ book? ✨

Happy Pride to these groups who braved an NYC heatwave to learn more about LGBTQ+ history! 🥵

June has been such a fantastic month with so many incredible tour groups! What an honor to be able to share and uplift this inspiring history in genuine and meaningful ways, walking in the literal footsteps of those who paved the way before us. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Here’s a sneak peek into our Q***r Zine Making Workshop at Columbia University, held in the historic Earl Hall! 🩵🌈📕

Did you know that in 1966, Columbia became the first university in the U.S. to officially recognize an LGBTQ+ student group? They were first known as the Student Homophile League, and they organized “gay dances” in Earl Hall. Hosting our workshop in the same building was such a cool experience, and a literal way of stepping in the footsteps of those who paved the way before us.

Zines, short for “magazines,” are self-made, DIY booklets that have long served as a platform of q***r resistance, self-expression, and creativity. In this workshop, we explored that history together, using zines as a powerful way to tell our stories, amplify our voices, and celebrate our community.
