Thank you to , , and a special thank you to for allowing us to have a special early screening of your latest documentary series one hour before the national release! From the start of the episode it was clear that this story was being told in a very inclusive way, much more than I had ever seen done. Before the screening, as I reflected on our history and what I might see, I found myself a little dismayed at the thought of black women like me once again being portrayed as mere footnotes or only as enslaved people, leaving unexplored the hypocritical element of the freedom the founding fathers proclaimed. I said to myself, I wonder how long it will take to see someone like myself on the screen; or if I will at all. Then the part came about Phyllis Wheatley. Although she was a slave, her incredible contribution to society was put on display. I sat there moved and thankful. I felt my place in all of this, which is what we should all be able to do. It’s clear that anyone watching will feel a part of this incredible story, as you all should.
