With the quest to promote world peace, the seaport of Shinagawa, Japan offered to be Portland, Maine’s sister city and generously gifted us this mailbox on our 5th anniversary in 1989.

Located in Post Office Park, the mailbox is a unique gift as a remembrance of Portland’s 1867 post office.

To achieve global peace we must demonstrate peace, and this act of kindness is a lovely demonstration of peace building by learning the culture and history of others. Thank you, Japan!

I’m standing next to a Portland Freedom Trail monument in Portland, Maine’s Lincoln Park. There are several freedom trail monuments you will see on my historic walking tour, but this is definitely my favorite. It’s where famous Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison started the Maine anti-slavery movement with a speech given in 1832. It's also where big crowds showed up to hear the great Frederick Douglass speak!

As Juneteenth approaches, we celebrate the end of slavery in the USA and honor the resilience and strength of black Americans. May we remember the past, celebrate the present, and continue to strive for a more just future for all. 🕊️🖤🤍

Old Port Holiday Historic Walking Tours are now in full swing!
❄️ 🎄🕎

We begin our 2 1/2 hour, 2 mile, exciting walking tour in the center of Monument Square (directly next to the City of Portland’s official holiday tree) to discuss the origins of the Christmas tree and the first Christmas celebrated in America. During our journey, we will discover over 50 historic stops, visit the magical lobster trap tree in the heart of the Old Port, and hear the story of Charles Dickens’s “bizarre” visit to Portland. At the end of the tour, we will visit the outside of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous home where you’ll hear the history of his famous poem Christmas Bells. Don’t miss it!

✨Public tour tickets available at Ticketmaster and Ticketweb. Private Tours available year-round. Visit OldPortHistoricTours.com for your exciting itinerary. Let’s go!✨
