Jessie on a Journey

Jessie on a Journey Adventurous solo travel blog sharing tips + resources for exploring the world . But I did. And on that note, how can I help you? Happy trails!

Have you ever felt like you weren't meant to do what you were *supposed to* do? Yea, that was me after graduating from the State University of New York at Albany with my BA/MA in Communication. It was 2011 -- before "travel blogging" was really a thing -- and my loved ones looked at me like I had three heads when I told them I wanted to skip the whole 9-to-5 thing in lieu of traveling the world so

lo and documenting it online. "But is that safe?"

"Women shouldn't be traveling on their own." "But what if the whole blogging thing doesn't work out?"

"Aren't you worried about meeting someone and settling down?"

These were just a few of the negative sentiments I had to tune out in order to make my dreams a reality. And today I travel the world -- mainly solo, sometimes with my husband Andy (because yes, even travelers can find love). I document these travels on my popular solo and adventure travel blog, Jessie on a Journey, which today serves as my full-time self-made career. Because yes, it is possible to do what many tell you is impossible :)

Jessie on a Journey offers an honest look into my adventures, advice, and detours. Whether you’re a solo traveler craving spontaneity, a wanderer in search of more than your typical sightseeing, or a blogger with dreams of making travel a profitable lifestyle, this is the destination for you to bring more meaning and fulfillment to your journey. Awaken your curiosity as I share real-talk and resources for exploring the world — and experiencing life — . I'd love to hear from you either here on Facebook or via email at [email protected].

Visiting the Women’s Carpet Association of Todra Valley in Morocco ✨

Out of all of the carpet places I visited on my trip, this felt the most authentic — particularly because it’s completely out of sight through a nondescript alley and has no signs (I never would have found it without my driver, Ibrahim!).

This cooperative is run by 25 local families where women weave handmade rugs using sheep wool and camel hair colored with all-natural dyes.

Sipping mint tea, you’ll learn how each rug is made and what the adorned Berber symbols mean. You can learn a few in the attached video.

Also, the garment I'm wearing below is a traditional Berber wedding blanket. So beautiful!

The best thing about Chattanooga is it's a walkable city with great restaurants and museums — and easy access to outdoor adventures like hiking, kayaking, and caving. 🥾

Plus, the flight is less than 2 hours direct from LaGuardia Airport. 😎

Here are some of my favorite shots from my weekend there. ⬇️

📍Hiking at Lula Lake Land Trust
📍Kayaking the Tennessee River in Downtown Chattanooga
📍Italian cream cake at St. John's Restaurant
📍Drinks at Stratus Rooftop Bar

💡Tip: For active adventures, Outdoor Chattanooga is a fantastic guide!

My favorite South of France beach clubs ⛱️

One fun thing to do in summer is visiting the many French Riviera beach clubs, like:

☀️ Vegaluna Beach Club. Located right in Cannes' lively Croisette boulevard, this club offers a beautiful view of the Lérins Islands and the Estral mountains — though the best part is the food (especially the fresh seafood!).

☀️ Bagatelle Beach Club. Situated on the picturesque Pampelonne Beach near Saint-Tropez, this high-end spot has luxurious sun loungers, comfortable deck chairs, and a fun atmosphere enhanced by a DJ and live music. Don't miss the truffle pizza piared with a cocktail.

☀️ Blue Beach Club. For something relaxed, this is my favorite affordable beach club in Nice. Grab a sun lounger and gaze out at the Bay of Angels while sipping a French wine. For families, there is also a separate children's swimming pool.

💡Tip: While summer is the popular time to go, visiting during shoulder season (April-May and September-October) means less crowds and better deals!

Top things to do in Marrakech (from a female traveler) 🇲🇦

I'm just back from this historic and fun Moroccan city. When visiting Marrakech, don't miss:

🥾 Explore the Medina. Dating back to 1070, it's the historic, walled part of the city with winding alleys filled with vendors selling food, beauty products, clothing, souvenirs, and more — plus there are lots of cats. 🐈

🚨 Warning: Make sure you have working Google Maps! The Medina is huge and chaotic and it's easy to get lost. Also, a common scam is for locals to tell you a certain road is "closed" and then guide you elsewhere before demanding a tip (don't go with them).

🍚 Take a food tour. I did a 3-hour tour and have never been so full in my life! We sampled 15+ delicious foods while exploring the Medina with a local guide.

✨ Visit Ben Youssef Medersa. Dating back to the 14th century and later rebuilt in the 1560s, this was once the largest Islamic college in North Africa. The architecture, central pool, and intricate carvings are incredible!

One of the best parts about hiking in Morocco's Atlas Mountains is passing — and sleeping in — remote Berber villages.

Not only is it peaceful and beautiful, but it allows you to experience true local life away from the crowds (one of the reasons I love trekking so much!).

When hiking to Morocco's Mount Toubkal, I remember seeing the High Atlas peak from a distance and thinking, "There is NO WAY I'm summiting that!" 🤯

But within 3 days of taking that first photo, I was on the top of North Africa's highest mountain. 😎

Tip: Most people do Mount Toubkal as a 2-day trek, but I highly recommend doing the extended 5-day trek for more epic views and to stay in remote Berber villages!

What happens when you invite two people you barely know to climb a mountain in Africa? 🏔️

After booking a trip to summit Mount Toubkal — the highest mountain in North Africa — my original hiking buddy unfortunately had to back out.

While I love solo travel, high altitude hiking is one of those experiences I find is best enjoyed with a hiking buddy (especially when you need someone to help you get through the tough times on the trail!). 😰

So, I put a call out into the universe, unsure if anyone would agree to such a niche adventure involving a 13,671-foot summit and shared base camp dorms.

To my surprise, .someday and .bougie.dirtbag didn’t just say yes — they had flights booked within hours. ✈️

Not only that, but we also had SO MUCH FUN, cheering each other on, sharing supplies, and helping each other when needed (thank you again for the boots, Carol 😅).

To end this little appreciate post, I'll just say you never know how traveling with new people will go, but after 2 weeks of being together 24/7, I can confidently say this trip was epic and I'm already looking forward to our next summit! 🥳

Have you ever said "yes" to a spontaneous travel adventure?

The worst part of solo travel:

When you’ve finally found a spot to sit with your coffee and sandwich, opened your laptop, and realize you have to pee—with nobody to watch your stuff. 🥲
