What’s the story behind the name boards of the Genesis of Narwhal Yacht Charters? A lot.

My parents lived on a sailboat for the first six years of their marriage. They named their sailboat the “Genesis”, which means the beginning, because it represented the beginning of their journey with one another. In 1973, my dad handmade these name boards, which are now prominently displayed on my sailboat.

I was lucky to have an influential father who was both a passionate sailor and entrepreneur. Unfortunately, he passed in 2000 and we had to sell the family boat. Miraculously, my older brother somehow had the wherewithal to remove the name boards days before the boat was shipped.

For 12 years, the Genesis name boards sat in storage in my mom’s attic. In 2012, I quit my corporate job, bought a Tayana 37, started my charter company, and moved onto my sailboat. I retrieved the Genesis name boards and with my family’s blessing, named my sailboat the Genesis. Fittingly, my younger sister was the first to sail with me after I bolted the name boards to my sailboat.

The Genesis represents many beginnings for me. It was both my new home (I lived on her for five years) and my new career / business. She brings me joy on a daily basis and keeps me connected to my father. Even more beautiful, my wife and I had our first date aboard the Genesis, I proposed aboard the Genesis, and we even married aboard the Genesis.

I meticulously maintain these name boards, like my father before me, and now the Genesis creates lifelong memories for everyone who sails aboard her. So when you see me smiling as I welcome you aboard in front of the Genesis name boards, remember that this “beginning” originated over five decades ago and you are about to embark on something truly special.

Wow! There’s no faking this beauty! Did you know what you’re looking at would cost at least $5,000 (annually!) to achieve? You can’t fake perfection. Bungs, teak filler, Japanese saw, sanding, two part cleaner, scrubbing, patience, staining 2x. What you’re looking at is decades of honing an art and sacrificing time away from loved ones to achieve it.

I’m rated the best at what I do because I don’t take shortcuts and have devoted my life to this. You can pay more, or you can pay less, for a charter on NY Harbor, but nothing will compare to what I provide. I’m the best because you deserve the best and I never forget that. The sun has set on the 14th sailing season of Narwhal Yacht Charters!

As always, many thanks to my customers, both new and repeat, who have turned my dream to sail for a living into a reality! Some 2025 highlights:

While I sailed some celebrities (John Mulaney for the 6th time, Madeline Cline, Paul Skenes, and Livvy Dunne), my core memory of this season is taking a five day sail with my wife and daughter to Manhasset Bay (Port Washington) and Northport Bay on Long Island Sound. We enjoyed the company of friends and family at both ports by exploring local restaurants, bakeries, cafes, parks, and beaches. I blushed when local boaters told me the Genesis was the talk of their circles. The highlight of the trip was seeing my daughter overwhelmed with joy during a magnificent sunset in Northport Bay as the Genesis swayed gently on her mooring. These annual trips remind me of the sailing adventures I had with my parents and siblings while growing up aboard the original Genesis. Creating new memories like this for my immediate family is a fitting way for me to honor my parents for the wonderful childhood they made possible for me.

Thanks to my customers, family, and friends for all the love, support, and motivation along the way! The Genesis and her captain will get some much needed rest this winter but are already eagerly awaiting the 2026 sailing season and the thousands of miles and smiles that will greet us along next year’s journey!
