Right here in Lower Manhattan once stood one of America’s most notorious federal jails.

The Metropolitan Correctional Center — the MCC — held everyone from mobsters and terrorists to high-profile defendants. In 2019, Jeffrey Epstein was being held here while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

Epstein died in his cell that August. His death was officially ruled a su***de.

The MCC was later shut down in 2021, leaving this unassuming building with one of the darkest histories in Lower Manhattan.

Why did New York build THIS enormous government building?

After the five boroughs consolidated into Greater New York in 1898, the city suddenly had a much bigger government to run — and needed space for its growing army of municipal workers.

The result was the massive Manhattan Municipal Building, completed in the early 20th century and still one of the largest government buildings in the world.

Look up and you’ll see Civic Fame standing at the top — more than 500 feet above the street.

What does NYC’s controversial new Chinatown jail have to do with a pond that disappeared nearly 200 years ago?

The new jail is rising near Collect Pond Park — named for the freshwater pond that once dominated this part of Lower Manhattan. After pollution turned the pond into a serious problem, the city drained and filled it in. The surrounding area would eventually become part of the infamous Five Points neighborhood.

Today, this small park is one of the few obvious reminders of the landscape that existed here before modern Manhattan took over.

One of Chinatown’s legendary late-night spots — and THIS is what I came for. 🦀

Great NY Noodletown has been a Chinatown institution for decades, but when soft-shell crab is on the menu, it’s hard to order anything else. Crispy on the outside, tender inside, and you can eat the entire crab — shell and all.
