“A synthesizer, looking back, sees a thief’s shadow.” There is no tour guide in NYC worthy of the profession who doesn’t own a well-thumbed, dog-eared, tattered-dust-jacketed copy of Gotham, and we are all forever indebted to Edwin Burrows and Mike Wallace, who passed away yesterday at the age of 83.

Gotham made our city’s history accessible to anyone who was curious and interested, and I’ve personally used the book to design dozens of tours and write many, many short articles and even a few book chapters. The things you could find buried in this book were often jaw-dropping, and once you found this stuff a dark history tour practically leapt into being straight from its pages.

But of all the phrases written in Gotham, it’s the one quoted here which has stayed with me the most over the last thirteen years in this business. We all draw on each other’s work, are inspired by shared scholarship, and benefit from the generous nature of public history. These are the “strands of scholarship” that a tour guide weaves into a narrative. This weaving, this selective inclusion in the story, this reframing and shaping and synergy is something only a human imagination is capable of. The process is the soul of the story.

Gotham was indispensable to so many of us who used it to create our own livelihoods. It, in turn, drew on the labor of thousands of other scholars. To all of these great human minds, and to Mike Wallace, we extend thanks today. Their work, his work, does not exist to be plundered and monetized but to be ingested, savored, appreciated, and passed on to everyone who is curious and interested in one of the world’s great cities.

Rest easy Mike Wallace, we’re happily continuing your work in your shadow.

Our final tour of the season is happening this Solstice weekend! Witches of Wall Street runs Saturday, June 20 at 4pm.

Step off the trading floor and into the hidden history of power, magic, and rebellion on the Witches of Wall Street tour—a spellbinding walk through lower Manhattan where money, mysticism, and social transgression collide.
